Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up to the property that evening, my heart did a little flip. Tucked right on the clifftop with those jaw-dropping sea views, it was a sleek, modern holiday let – all clean lines, big windows, and that cosy vibe you crave after a long drive. First impressions? Spot on. We cracked open a bottle of wine on the balcony as the sun dipped into the ocean, anticipation buzzing. Tomorrow, we’d hit the coastal paths – proper walking heaven. Next morning, jackpot: blue skies and a gentle breeze. We laced up our boots and headed out along the South West Coast Path, straight from the door. It’s magical round here – rugged cliffs plunging into turquoise waves, gulls wheeling overhead, and wildflowers nodding in the hedgerows. We wandered towards Talland Bay, about a couple of miles along, stopping to skim stones and gawp at seals basking on the rocks below. The path’s a dream in good weather: undulating just enough to feel like an adventure without knackering you. Picnicked on cheese rolls with a thermos of tea, feeling like we’d cracked life itself. “This is why we do it,” I said, grinning. But oh, Cornwall weather – fickle as they come. Day two, we planned a longer hike to Polperro, that picture-postcard fishing village a few miles west. Set off optimistic, but halfway there, the heavens opened. Mist rolled in thick as pea soup, turning the path into a slippery mudslide. We trudged on, hoods up, laughing through chattering teeth as rain lashed our faces. “Romantic, this, yeah?” I joked, slipping arse-over-tit into a puddle. Proper British stoicism kicked in – we sheltered in a cove, munching flapjacks, watching the storm rage out at sea. By the time we stumbled into Polperro for cream teas and pasties, soaked to the skin, it felt like a badge of honour. Plans changed on a dime, but that’s the joy of it. A quieter day followed, back on home turf with a short loop to a nearby beach. Drizzle again, mind, so we embraced the squelch, pondering life’s little parallels – how plans go awry, but you adapt and come out stronger. Reflecting on it now, those walks, rain or shine, were the heart of the trip. Cornwall’s paths don’t care about your itinerary; they just pull you in, weather and all. We left fitter, happier, and already plotting the next soggy stomp. Proper tonic for the soul. |
