Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
The drive down to Cornwall felt like the perfect escape from the daily grind, me and Sarah piling into the car with our spaniel, Monty, wedged between us, tail thumping away. We'd been dreaming of this break for months – just us two, a bit of coastal air, and no emails pinging. But typical us, about an hour in, I took a wrong turn near Truro and ended up on some narrow lane that had hedges swallowing the wing mirrors. "This is it, we're lost in Narnia," Sarah laughed, while Monty whined for his walkies. A quick sat-nav reset and we were back on track, hearts racing but giggling at our daftness.

Pulling up to the place near Mawnan Smith, just three miles from Falmouth and Penryn, my first thought was "blimey, this is posh without trying too hard." It's this cracking luxury holiday home settled on the outskirts, dog-friendly heaven for a couple like us. Off-road parking was a godsend after the A30 crawl, and the communal grounds looked lush, with an outdoor heated pool, hot tubs, sauna, and even a games room boasting a pool table and table tennis. We couldn't wait to dive in – that anticipation bubbled up as we unloaded, imagining lazy laps and steamy soaks.

Stepping inside, the light and airy open-plan living space hit us like a warm hug. Proper airy, with a smart workspace nook and desk if we fancied pretending to work, but mostly we eyed the fully-equipped kitchen. Sarah cracked open a bottle of fizz we'd brought, and we clinked glasses at the dining table, toasting to doing sod all. First impressions? Spot on – it felt like our own little haven, cosy yet indulgent, perfect for unwinding.

The next few days blurred into simple joys and that lovely cottage-life chaos we crave. Mornings started with Monty dragging us down to the Lizard Heritage Coast paths, just a short hop away – those rugged cliffs and hidden coves near Mawnan Smith are pure magic. We'd puff up a gentle hill, spot seals bobbing offshore, then flop on the beach at Maenporth for pasties from the beach café, sand between our toes. Back at the property, chaos ensued: me attempting a full English in the kitchen (smoke alarm heroics included), Sarah bossing the hot tub while Monty splashed like a furry torpedo in the shallow end of the pool.

Evenings were for gentle rivalry in the games room – I thrashed her at pool (beginner's luck, she claims), then we'd sauna-sweat out the pasty calories, emerging pink and pruny. One night, over homemade spag bol, we reflected on how we've got into this rut of scrolling holidays on our phones instead of just booking them. "We're not getting any younger," I said, half-joking, as Sarah nodded, her hand in mine. This break reminded us life's too short for what-ifs – sometimes you just need a hot tub and a daft dog to shake things up.

It was one of those stays that recharges the soul without the faff. If you're after relaxed couple time with a splash of luxury amid Cornwall's wild beauty, this corner of the world delivers. We left buzzing, already plotting the return.
