Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's longest drive from Bristol, nursing a flat tyre just past Launceston that had me swearing under my breath and googling the nearest garage on my phone. It was early autumn, you see, that golden shoulder season where the leaves are just starting to crisp up and the tourists have thinned out, leaving the roads blissfully empty—well, until my little mishap. By the time I pulled up to the cottage, heart racing with that familiar holiday buzz, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, painting everything in this soft, amber glow that made the whole place look like a postcard.

First impressions? Blimey, they hit me right in the feels. It's one of those classic stone cottages tucked away near Bodmin, all cosy and unpretentious with a thatched roof and a front garden bursting with late-season flowers—hydrangeas still holding their purple heads high despite the cooling air. I stepped inside, dropped my bags, and just breathed it all in: the faint scent of woodsmoke from the fireplace I'd soon light, and views out the back to rolling fields turning that rusty autumn red. No crowds, no queues—just me, the quiet, and the season wrapping around like a favourite jumper.

Autumn shaped every bit of this trip, turning what could have been a standard getaway into something properly magical. Mornings started with mist rolling off the nearby moors, perfect for wrapping up in a scarf and heading out for a brisk walk along the Camel Trail. The blackberries were still ripe along the hedges, fat and juicy from the recent rains, so I'd pick a handful for breakfast while dodging the odd sodden leaf swirling in the wind. One day, I wandered down to the Jamaica Inn—yes, that one, just a short hop away—where the fog clung to the rooftops like a Daphne du Maurier novel come to life. Inside, I nursed a hot cider by the fire, chuckling at how the chill outside made the warmth hit even harder. "You're turning into a proper country bumpkin," I thought, smiling to myself over the steam.

Afternoons were for pottering about the cottage garden, raking up the first proper fall of leaves and pretending I was in some idyllic Enid Blyton tale. The cooler temps meant no sweaty hikes, just gentle ambles to spots like Cardinham Woods, where the canopy was a riot of orange and gold, crunching underfoot. Evenings? Pure bliss. I'd cook up a stew with local spuds and pasties from the farm shop down the lane—autumn's bounty making everything taste richer, earthier. Sat by the window with a glass of red, watching the light fade over the moors, I had one of those quiet moments of reflection: life's too short not to chase these simple joys, especially when the season gifts you such perfect stillness.

Sure, the odd rainy squall tried to dampen things, sending me scurrying back with wet boots and a grin, but that's Cornwall in autumn for you—wild, whimsical, and wonderfully alive. If you're after a holiday that feels like a warm hug from nature herself, book something like this now, before winter nips at its heels. I left feeling utterly refreshed, already plotting my return.
