Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to that barn conversion near Penryn after what felt like the world's longest drive from London. We'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting, but about an hour in, disaster struck – a rogue pasty wrapper from our service station stop had wedged itself under the accelerator pedal, causing a proper heart-in-mouth moment as the car lurched. Thank goodness for the AA app; we sorted it quick enough and carried on, anticipation building as the M5 gave way to those twisty Cornish lanes. By the time we turned down the private drive to Treverva Farm, I was buzzing – what a spot, perched in this sleepy hamlet overlooking Argal Reservoir, all tranquil and picture-perfect.

First impressions? Blimey, it blew us away. The reverse-level setup meant we climbed straight into this massive open-plan living room with views that stretched for miles – reservoir sparkling below, countryside rolling out like a postcard. Four bedrooms sorted us lot perfectly, with zip-link beds that we twinned up for the kids, and those en-suites were a godsend after the road trip. It felt luxurious without being fussy, just right for flopping about in.

But honestly, the joy of the whole week was doing bugger all. After years of manic holidays – theme parks, hikes, the lot – this was our deliberate slowdown. Mornings kicked off with lazy brews on the terrace, watching mist lift off the water while the kids pottered in the garden. No schedules, no rush. We'd wander the doorstep paths for a gentle amble through the fields, breathing in that clean Cornish air, then back for endless hours sprawled on the sofas. I devoured three books I'd been meaning to crack for ages – one of those twisty thrillers that had me jumping at shadows come dusk. The other half nailed a massive fantasy saga, glasses steaming up from the wood burner we'd light on chillier evenings.

The garden was our playground, really. Picnics under the trees, dozing in hammocks (well, attempting to, until I got tangled like a fool – classic me). We gave the grass tennis court a whirl one sunny afternoon, rackets provided and all, but it lasted about twenty minutes before we admitted defeat and retreated for tea and biscuits. Laughter all round, no pressure. A quick hop to Penryn market for pasties and fudge kept the fridge stocked, but we barely left the place. Falmouth's beaches and pubs were tempting, just a short drive away, and we did pop over once for fish and chips by the harbour, but mostly? Blissful inertia.

Reflecting on it now, that week was a gentle nudge: life's too short not to hit pause sometimes. No Instagram frenzy, just us, the views, and the sheer relief of switching off. If you're after proper RandR in Cornwall, find yourself a spot like this – you'll wonder why you ever bothered rushing about. Pure magic.
