Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
The drive down to Mullion Cove was meant to be a breeze, but oh no, not for us. We'd set off from Bristol full of beans, kids buzzing in the back with pasties already half-eaten and crumbs everywhere. Then, just past Truro, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly – directing us down some tiny lane that turned into a single-track muddle with hedges clawing at the car. We ended up doing a 17-point turn while a local farmer in a Land Rover eyed us like we'd just landed from Mars. "Mum, are we lost forever?" my youngest piped up, and I had to laugh through the stress. By the time we crested the hill towards the cove, we were all a bit frazzled, but that first glimpse of the cliffs plunging into the sea? Pure magic. The anticipation I'd built up all week – scrolling through photos of wave-lashed shores – suddenly felt spot on.

Pulling up to this perched cliff-top gem, I let out a massive sigh of relief. It's this exquisite family retreat, all characterful and spacious, with five boutique bedrooms each boasting their own balcony for those far-reaching ocean vistas. Two luxuriously cosy sitting rooms, a dining hall, study, yoga studio, cedar hot tub, and two luscious gardens – it screamed 'cherished memories ahead'. We tumbled out, bags spilling everywhere, and the kids immediately dashed to the gardens, whooping at the salty breeze whipping in from the Atlantic. First impressions? Stunning. The views from the balconies had us glued – endless blue horizons, gulls wheeling overhead, and the distant crash of waves on Mullion Harbour below. I stood there, cuppa in hand, thinking, 'We've made it, chaos and all.'

That evening, we shook off the journey mishaps with a splash in the hot tub – pure bliss under the stars, steam rising as the sun dipped behind the cliffs. The next morning, a short stroll down to Mullion Cove beach revealed rock pools teeming with crabs (the kids spent hours poking about), and we wandered over to the harbour for fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on the harbour wall while seals bobbed curiously offshore. It's that classic Cornish mix – rugged coast, friendly locals nodding hello, and pasty shops on every corner. One afternoon, we claimed the yoga studio for a family 'stretch' session that dissolved into giggles when Dad toppled over trying downward dog with a beer belly.

Reflecting on it now, that bumpy arrival was a right laugh in hindsight. It reminded me how holidays aren't about flawless plans; they're about rolling with the sat-nav gremlins and letting the place work its charm. This spot captured us instantly – those sea views from every balcony pulling you back outside, the gardens begging for lazy barbecues. We've already pencilled in a return; Cornwall's got its hooks in deep. What a cracking first escape.
