Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Cornwall – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away like it owned the road, and us hitting a proper downpour just past Exeter. The rain was lashing so hard I couldn’t see the bonnet, and I took a wrong turn onto one of those tiny lanes that Cornwall loves, the kind with hedges taller than the car. We ended up splashing through a puddle the size of a pond, laughing our heads off as the windscreen wipers battled for their lives. But honestly, it just built the anticipation – that bubbly feeling of knowing a proper break was waiting, away from emails and deadlines.

Pulling up to the holiday property felt like arriving at a mate’s place for the weekend. It’s one of those classic self-catering cottages in a peaceful holiday park near Bodmin, all cosy and low-key with a lived-in charm that screams ‘relax here’. The first impressions? Spot on. Sun peeking through the clouds, birds doing their thing, and our little patch of garden stretching out like an invitation to do bugger all.

That first afternoon set the tone perfectly. We dumped the bags, cracked open a cuppa, and flopped into the garden chairs. No grand plans, no ticking off lists of must-sees. Just the joy of doing very little. The garden was a dream – wildflowers nodding in the breeze, a bit of grass for lounging, and enough privacy to pretend the world had shrunk to that square of green. I spent hours there with a dog-eared paperback, the kind you forget the plot of because you’re too busy soaking up the quiet. Every now and then, a butterfly would flit past, or you’d hear the distant call of a gull, and it was enough to make you grin.

Days blurred into this blissful rhythm of laziness. Mornings meant a slow brew in the kitchen, maybe toasting some crumpets while peering out at the garden waking up. Afternoons? More reading, feet up, letting chapters drift by as the sun warmed my toes. I’d nod off for a cheeky nap, book sliding onto my lap, and wake up feeling like I’d won the lottery. Evenings were for lazy suppers – nothing fancy, just pasta chucked together from the local shop, eaten outside as the sky turned that Cornish pink. One night, I caught myself staring at the stars, thinking, ‘Blimey, when did I last just sit and look up?’ It was one of those gentle moments of self-reflection – realising how wired I am back home, always rushing, and how blooming good it felt to switch it off.

We wandered the park paths a bit, spotting squirrels and saying hello to other holidaymakers with their dogs, but mostly it was about slowing right down. No hikes up distant cliffs or pub crawls – just cottage days that fed the soul. By the time we packed up, I was plotting our return. Cornwall’s magic isn’t in the big adventures; it’s in these pockets of peace, reminding you that doing sod all can be the best holiday ever.
