Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Charlestown – that classic Cornish trek from the motorway, winding through narrow lanes with hedges towering over the car like nosy neighbours. We’d set off full of beans, playlist blaring sea shanties for the occasion, but about halfway there, disaster struck: a sudden downpour turned the A390 into a river, and we aquaplaned right into a massive puddle. Heart in my mouth, we pulled over for a brew and a laugh about how us northerners always underestimate the West Country weather. Still, by the time we crested the hill, the sun was peeking out, and there it was – this stunning reverse-level place nestled in the hills, with sea views that hit you like a warm hug. Balcony begging for sundowners, hot tub steaming invitingly. First impressions? Pure magic.

We arrived buzzing with anticipation, dreaming of lazy beach days, but Cornwall had other ideas. Day one, blue skies, so we laced up and headed straight for Charlestown Beach, just a short stroll away. That harbour’s a gem – tall ships bobbing, fishing boats chugging out. We wandered the sands, dodging jellyfish washed up by the tide, then looped up the coastal path towards Duporth. Gentle cliffs, gorse buzzing with bees, views stretching to St Austell Bay. Felt like we’d stepped into a Poldark episode, minus the drama. Popped into the local pub for a pint of Tribute afterwards – proper job done.

Next morning, classic British twist: woke to horizontal rain lashing the windows. No beach today, then. Instead, we rugged up and braved a clifftop hike along the South West Coast Path. It’s right on the doorstep, that path – rugged, windswept, with waves crashing below like they were auditioning for a disaster movie. We sloshed through puddles, hoods up, giggling as the gale tried to whip our maps away. Spotted seals barking on the rocks near Porthpean, and even a rainbow arching over Carlyon Bay. By the end, soaked to the skin, we tumbled back for hot tub salvation – bubbling away under grey skies, sipping mulled cider. Best decision ever.

The weather kept us on our toes. One afternoon, a rare sunny spell lured us out for a family ramble to Pentewan – golden sands calling, but we stuck to the headland trail for those epic panoramas. Kids raced ahead, spotting seabirds; I lagged behind, pondering how these spontaneous hikes beat any gym session. Me, who usually scrolls Netflix on holidays, actually loving the mud and the burn. Then came the real kicker: a misty day forced an inland detour through the lanes to Pinetum Gardens, just up the road. Not a hike exactly, but those winding paths among rhododendrons and ponds felt like a secret adventure, rain pattering on leaves like applause.

By week’s end, we’d notched up soggy slogs and sun-kissed strides, every weather whim turning into a story. That’s Cornwall for you – unpredictable, unmissable. Hot tub toasts to more of the same next time.
