Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's longest drive from Bristol, complete with a cheeky diversion when the satnav decided to send me down a narrow lane that was basically a goat track. Picture me, white-knuckled on the wheel, dodging hedges and praying for a passing place as a tractor loomed in the rearview. Classic British road trip, innit? But as I crested the hill near Bodmin, the anticipation kicked in – those rolling green hills and glimpses of the Cornish countryside had me buzzing. What a relief when I pulled up to this cosy barn conversion, all tucked away in a peaceful spot with that perfect rural charm. First impressions? Spot on – it felt like instant holiday mode.

Keen to stretch my legs after the drive, I laced up my boots for a wander around Lanhydrock estate, just a stone's throw away. The sun was peeking out, so off I went, following the leafy paths through ancient woods and past babbling streams. It's proper idyllic, with bluebells nodding in the breeze and the odd squirrel darting about. I even spotted a heron by the pond – made me feel like I'd stepped into a David Attenborough doc. That first hike set the tone: fresh air filling my lungs, no emails pinging, just me and the trails.

Next morning, though, the British weather decided to flex its muscles. Grey skies rolled in overnight, and by breakfast it was lashing down. No matter – I wasn't about to let a bit of drizzle scupper things. Wrapped up in waterproofs, I headed out for a proper moorland tramp across Cardinham Moor, not far off. The rain turned the paths muddy, and I slipped once or twice, emerging looking like a drowned rat with a daub of Cornish clay on my cheek. Laughable now, but in the moment, I was cursing my optimism. Still, there's something magical about Cornwall in the wet – the gorse glows brighter, the streams roar, and you earn every pub pint at the end.

The weather kept us on our toes the whole week. One day, a rare blue-sky burst lured me along the Fowey Valley trails, where I clambered over stiles and picnicked by the river, watching dog walkers and cyclists whizz past. Bliss. But come afternoon, clouds bubbled up, forcing a hasty retreat. Undeterred, I switched to shorter loops around the property's grounds – those winding lanes perfect for a rainy ramble, with blackberries to pick and zero traffic to dodge. It got me thinking, mid-squelch through a puddle: how often do we chase perfect plans back home? Here, the unpredictability was the fun bit. No grand hikes some days, just gentle plodding that left me properly chilled.

By week's end, I'd clocked miles of muddy boots and a refreshed soul. Those walks, rain or shine, were the heart of it all – a reminder that Cornwall's wild edges don't care about forecasts, and neither should you. Can't wait to go back.
