Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Crantock – that classic Cornish holiday trek from the motorway, winding through narrow lanes with hedges taller than the car. We’d loaded up the boot with enough snacks to feed an army, but about ten miles out, disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a splatter that had us all giggling through the windscreen wipers. “Welcome to Cornwall,” I laughed, as we finally spotted the sea glinting in the distance. The anticipation built – would it live up to the photos? As we pulled onto the private driveway, my heart lifted. Nestled in this cosy coastal village near Newquay, the five-bedroom holiday home greeted us with its enclosed front garden bursting with lavender scents, leading to a welcoming entrance. First impressions? Spot on – we tumbled into a stylish sitting room with a massive plush corner sofa and a huge Smart TV, perfect for collapsing after the journey.

But honestly, the real magic of this place was how it whispered, “Slow down, mate.” We were a big family group, ten of us, and after years of manic holidays rushing from castle to beach, this was our rebellion: doing sod all, and loving every minute. The contemporary vibe inside felt just right – airy, comfy, with everything you need without the fuss. We barely left the enclosed garden, that private oasis with the hot tub bubbling away like it was daring us to dip in. Mornings started lazy: I’d brew a pot of tea, grab a book from the shelf (there were loads, from thrillers to beachy romances), and flop on a lounger while the others stirred. The kids – well, the younger ones – vanished into the games room for a bit of ping-pong or arcade action, but even they’d drift out to join the sprawl.

Afternoons blurred into hot tub soaks, the warm jets easing out the drive’s kinks as we chatted about nothing much – work woes, daft memories, the best pasty spots in Newquay (five minutes away, should we fancy a wander). No grand plans; just reading under the sun, flipping pages while gulls wheeled overhead and the faint crash of waves drifted from Crantock Beach, a short stroll down the lane. One day, I caught myself staring at a butterfly on the lavender, thinking, “Blimey, when did I last just sit?” It was that gentle nudge – you know, the one that hits mid-holiday, reminding you life’s too short for constant hustling. We’d fire up the barbecue in the evening, grilling local sausages from the village shop, then pile onto the sofa for a film, feet up, no agenda.

Nights were pure bliss: stargazing from the garden, wrapped in blankets, the hot tub still steaming. No early alarms, no itineraries – just the joy of pottering, napping, and letting Cornwall’s gentle rhythm sink in. Looking back, that small mishap on the road was the perfect start; it set the tone for a week of proper unwinding. If you’re after a luxury base to switch off near Newquay’s buzz but crave those lazy cottage days, this spot’s a gem. We left fuller, slower, and already plotting a return.
