Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Carbis Bay – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav had me veering off down these tiny, hedge-lined lanes that felt like they were closing in on us, and just as we hit the final stretch, the heavens opened. Torrential rain, wipers on full pelt, and me squinting at signs for St Ives while my other half clutched the map like it was a lifeline. Then, the pièce de résistance: a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, leaving us in hysterics and covered in what I hope was just rain splatter. We pulled up to the property soaked to the skin, laughing like loons, but honestly, that chaotic arrival only made the first impressions hit harder.

Nestled right in that utterly desirable spot in Carbis Bay, near St Ives, this sleek and modern retreat was like stepping into a hug from an old friend you didn’t know you needed. It’s the sort of place that screams serene sanctuary – think clean lines, cosy vibes, and all the ingredients for a proper getaway, whether you’re a couple stealing a weekend or a family piling in with the kids. We tumbled through the door, dripping puddles everywhere, and were greeted by the most inviting open-plan space: huge windows framing the bay’s shimmering waters, even through the downpour. Dropping our bags, we made a beeline for the bubbling hot tub on the terrace – yes, it’s right there, waiting like a warm embrace. Slipping in (after a quick towel-dry, mind), with the rain pattering around us, felt like pure magic. The anticipation on that drive had built up to this: crystal-clear views of the beach below, and that first glimpse of the sea had us grinning ear to ear.

First impressions? Blown away. The place is spot-on for unwinding – complimentary access to the on-site spa facilities meant we could sneak in a sauna session later, steam rising as we chatted about how we’d got there in one piece. Carbis Bay beach is literally a stone’s throw away, those soft sands and gentle waves calling us for a paddle the next morning. We wandered down there at dusk, past little rock pools teeming with crabs, the air thick with that salty Cornish tang. St Ives is just a hop along the coast path – we ambled over for fish and chips wrapped in paper, eaten on a bench watching the fishing boats bob. Nothing fancy, but it tasted like heaven after our soggy saga.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was a gift, really. It stripped away any preconceptions and let the magic sink in unfiltered. No filters needed here – just real, restorative bliss. If you’re after a spot to recharge by the sea, with hot tub stars and spa perks thrown in, this is your Cornish dream. We left already plotting a return, mishaps and all.
