Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
By the time we rolled up, the sun was peeking through, and there it was—this cosy stone cottage with a thatched roof, tucked away down a quiet lane, all low doorways and flower-filled window boxes. First impressions? Pure magic. The anticipation had built all journey, and stepping inside felt like slipping into someone else’s lovely life. We dumped the bags and cracked open a pasty from the village shop—proper job, that. The real joy, though, came from stumbling on Cornwall’s hidden corners by sheer accident. No tourist traps for us; we let the lanes lead us astray. First day, aiming for a vague walk near Cardinham Woods, we veered off onto a bridle path that dead-ended at this secret waterfall—honestly, just a trickle over mossy rocks into a glassy pool, but with sunlight dappling through the trees, it was our private Eden. We picnicked there on cheese pasties and cider, the kids splashing about while I pretended not to notice the midges plotting revenge. Next morning, another wrong turn from the cottage took us to a forgotten cove down past Warleggan—tiny, pebbly beach hemmed in by cliffs, where seals bobbed just offshore like nosy neighbours. No crowds, just the crash of waves and us foraging for limpets (which we didn’t eat, mind—health and safety first). I sat there with a cuppa from the flask, watching the husband build a wonky cairn, and had one of those moments: you know, realising how daft it is to chase Instagram perfection when these accidental finds feel a million times better. Me, who’s usually glued to Google Maps—talk about a lesson learned. Evenings were for ambling back via random farm tracks, discovering a wildflower meadow buzzing with butterflies or a crumbling chapel ruin half-swallowed by ivy. One night, we got properly lost in the woods, torches out, giggling like idiots until we spotted the cottage lights twinkling like a beacon. Fish and chips from the Bodmin Moor van (greasy heaven), then collapsing by the Aga with a book. It was those off-the-beaten-path surprises that made it unforgettable—no grand plans, just the thrill of the unknown. If you’re heading to Cornwall, ditch the itinerary and embrace the detours. You might end up with muddy boots and a full heart, just like us. Can’t wait to go back. |
