Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, dreaming of pasties and sea views, but about an hour in, disaster struck – my sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly and rerouted me down a single-track lane that was basically a goat path masquerading as a road. Twigs scraping the sides of the car, a pheasant eyeballing me like I'd gatecrashed its picnic, and me sweating buckets wondering if I'd end up in a hedge. Classic me, really – overpacking the boot with enough snacks to feed a rugby team, only to spill half my crisps trying to fish out a map. But hey, that's holidays for you, innit?

By the time I rolled up to the mill house near Truro, I was knackered but buzzing with that proper arrival anticipation. You know the feeling? Heart racing a bit, half-expecting it to be a letdown after the hype. No chance. First impressions? Absolute cracker. It's this cosy little converted mill house, all tucked away in a peaceful spot by the water, with that charming, lived-in vibe that screams 'kick back and relax'. The sort of place where you step inside and instantly feel the holiday switch flip on – no traffic noise, just the gentle trickle of the stream outside and birds doing their thing.

I dumped my bags (crisp crumbs everywhere, naturally) and had a proper nose around. The open-plan living space is spot on for solo chilling or mates crashing over – comfy sofas begging for a Netflix binge, a kitchen kitted out enough to whip up a fry-up without faffing about. Upstairs, the bedrooms are snug as a bug, with views that make you grin like an idiot first thing in the morning. Mine overlooked the garden, which was basically a wild Cornish paradise of flowers and that fresh, briny air wafting in. I cracked open the patio doors, plonked myself on a chair with a cuppa, and thought, 'Right, this is it. Pure bliss.'

That first evening, I wandered down to the nearby River Kenwyn – it's literally a stone's throw away – and watched the sun dip low, turning everything golden. Picked up some local cider from a farm shop just up the road (pro tip: Truro's markets are gold for that sort of thing), and settled in for a solo barbecue. Nearly set fire to my eyebrows faffing with the disposable one, mind you – another self-inflicted mishap to add to the tally. Laughing at myself over it, I had one of those gentle moments: life's too short for perfect plans. Sometimes the scrappy arrivals make the good bits shine brighter.

Next morning, fuelled by that epic view, I headed out for a gentle stroll along the waterways towards the city centre. Truro's got that proper Cornish charm – wandered past the cathedral, grabbed a cream tea at a wee café (jam first, obviously), and mooched around the independent shops without a care. No need for big adventures when the mill house feels like your own secret hideaway. Honestly, if you're after a laid-back spot to recharge, this corner of Cornwall delivers in spades. Can't wait to go back – minus the sat-nav drama next time.
