About Mill House.

Mawnan Smith, on the northern banks of the Helford estuary, is an ideal base for exploring west and central Cornwall. This quaint village features a popular 17th-century thatched pub (the Red Lion), restaurant, shops, a working forge, and craft centre. Once a distribution hub for the Lizard Peninsula, with materials ferried across the Helford River, it now boasts the restored 'Old Smithy' by the Anvil Trust. Close to Maenporth Beach and the estuary, it's in a peaceful Cornish corner, near Falmouth's town centre, harbour, and attractions.

Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Cornwall last month – sat nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Exeter, sending us on a wild goose chase through narrow lanes that felt more like goat tracks. We ended up in some random village, arguing over whether to trust the reroute or just follow the seagulls. Classic me, panicking about the kids in the back getting hangry, but it turned out to be the perfect opener to our holiday. By the time we rolled up to this stunning luxury home stay near Falmouth – all ultra-modern vibes with a stable door entrance and that welcome tray of local cheeses and chutneys that had us drooling – the stress melted away. First impressions? Blown away. Vast open-plan living space upstairs with oak floors, sleek fittings, and a hot tub waiting like a bubbly embrace. Felt like we'd stumbled into a boutique hotel hidden in the Cornish countryside.

We were buzzing with that arrival high, cracking open the complimentary treats and firing up the wood burner as the inevitable drizzle kicked in. But honestly, the real magic kicked off when we embraced getting lost – no plans, just wanderlust. The enclosed garden was a godsend for the little ones, letting them run wild while we sank into the hot tub, then we'd pile into the car (or on foot, when close) for impromptu adventures. Our first hidden gem? A tiny cove we found by total fluke, turning off a unmarked lane after the sat nav glitched again. Tucked away south of Falmouth, this pebbly beach – let's call it our secret splash spot – had crystal water lapping at jagged rocks, zero crowds, just us and a couple of seals popping up like nosy neighbours. We picnicked on pasties grabbed from a no-frills bakery en route, laughing as waves nipped our toes.

Next day, aiming for a vague walk, we veered off-path near Maenporth and discovered a wildflower meadow spilling down to a forgotten tidal pool. Proper off-the-beaten-track stuff – no signs, no tourists snapping selfies. The kids turned into feral explorers, skimboarding on mini waves, while I reflected on how I could've spent years mapping routes on apps, missing this raw joy. Me, the control freak who'd usually plot every minute, finally loosening up. It was a gentle nudge: sometimes the best memories hide in the detours.

Evenings were pure bliss back at the house – that mega Smart TV for rainy movie nights with DVDs and board games stacked high, or firing up the barbie on the private terrace with a glass of red. One night, a wrong turn led us to a secluded harbour nook within a couple of miles, where weathered fishing boats bobbed and a lone ice cream van played jaunty tunes. We scored the creamiest 99s, watching the sunset paint the sea pink. Another jaunt unearthed a smuggling cave trail along the cliffs – stumbled upon it after ignoring "no access" vibes – echoing with tales we'd later Google.

Staying here, with its four plush bedrooms, en-suite indulgence, and that central kitchen island groaning under gadgets for family feasts, felt like the ultimate base for these serendipitous finds. Cornwall's got the blockbuster beaches, sure, but it's the accidental gems – the lost lanes to empty coves and whispering meadows – that make you fall for it. We left with sun-kissed cheeks, fuller hearts, and a pact: next time, ditch the sat nav entirely.
