Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Cornwall – one of those classic British road trips where the sat-nav decides to have a midlife crisis just as you hit the A38. We’d piled into the car from Bristol, kids in the back squabbling over crisps, and about halfway in, the thing rerouted us through some winding lanes that felt more like a goat track than a proper road. “Are we lost?” my wife asked, peering at the hedges swallowing us whole. Turned out it was a shortcut, but it had us all laughing by the end, windows down, singing along to some terrible 90s playlist. By the time we crested the hill and spotted the house nestled in the countryside near Looe, the anticipation was buzzing – that proper holiday glow where you just know it’s going to be spot on.

First impressions? Blimey, it didn’t disappoint. It’s one of those spacious countryside retreats, dead ideal for a big group like ours – we were nine in total, with room to spare across seven bedrooms. Thoughtful setup everywhere, loads of living space to flop about in, and from the off, it screamed “relax, you’ve arrived”. We tumbled out of the car, bags everywhere, and just stood there breathing it all in. The garden stretched out like an invitation to do sod all, with views over the rolling fields that made the city feel a million miles away.

And that’s exactly what we did – sweet nothing, for days on end. No grand plans, no ticking off landmarks. Mornings started lazy: I’d make a pot of tea (proper builder’s brew, none of your weak leaf stuff), then we’d scatter. The garden became our universe – that huge lawn perfect for lounging on picnic blankets, kids building dens under the trees while us adults cracked open paperbacks we’d been meaning to read for months. I devoured a battered old P.G. Wodehouse, chuckling away in a sun-trap corner, occasionally yelling “Oi, don’t throw that!” at the footballers. Lunch was whatever we rustled up from the Looe Co-op – pasties, strawberries from a nearby farm shop, eaten al fresco with the buzz of bees as background noise.

Afternoons blurred into that glorious slow-down mode. We’d fire up the barbecue some days, but mostly it was about sinking into the comfy outdoor spots, watching clouds drift by. One evening, I caught myself just sitting there, pint in hand, listening to the nothing – no traffic, no notifications, just birds and the faint sea whisper from a couple of miles off. Made me reflect a bit, you know? Back home, I’m always rushing – work emails at midnight, kids’ schedules like a military op. Here, time stretched out, and it hit me how rare it is to just *be*. Felt a proper softie admitting it, but holidays like this recharge the batteries like nothing else.

Evenings were pure bliss in the massive living areas – board games that descended into chaos (Monopoly fights are a family tradition), or sprawling on sofas with Netflix, feet up. No one wanted to leave the bubble. Sure, we wandered down to the beach at Looe once for a dip – bracing sea air, chips from the harbour – but mostly, it was garden lazing, reading marathons, and that unhurried joy of togetherness. Cornwall at its laziest, and honestly, it’s the best way to do it. Can’t wait to go back.
