Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Hayle in Cornwall – that classic British holiday trek where the M5 seems to stretch on forever, and just as we hit Devon, the heavens opened. Cue me, white-knuckling the wheel in our ancient estate car, while the kids in the back bickered over who got the last ginger nut. We pulled over near Exeter for an emergency pasty stop, laughing at the rain lashing the windows, and by the time we trundled into Cornwall, the sun was peeking through like it knew we’d arrived.

As we crested the hill towards the property, my heart did a little flip – there it was, this gorgeous five-bedroom holiday home, all welcoming and tucked away just right for unwinding. First impressions? Spot on. Stepping inside felt like sinking into a warm hug: the spacious sitting room with its plush sofas and that cracking woodburning stove just begging for a lazy evening, and the kitchen kitted out with everything you’d need to whip up a feast without breaking a sweat. We cracked open a bottle of bubbly at the dining table, toasting the week ahead, and I could already feel the tension melting away.

But honestly, the real joy of the place was doing sod all – and I mean that in the best possible way. After years of frantic family holidays packed with itineraries, this was our chance to proper slow down. Mornings started late, with me padding out to the garden in slippers, mug of tea in hand, plonking myself on a lounger to watch the world go by. The garden’s a belter – private, lush, and just big enough to feel like your own little Eden, with birdsong and the distant hum of the sea about 3 miles off towards Hayle Towans beach. No need to rush there; we’d wander down once or twice for a gentle potter along the sand, toes in the cool waves, but mostly? Nah. Blissful nothing.

Afternoons blurred into reading marathons. I devoured a dog-eared Philippa Gregory in the sitting room, feet up, while the others sprawled nearby – one with a crossword, the lot of us rotating for stove-top toasties and endless cups of builder’s tea. The kids, shock horror, even joined in, ditching their screens for comics and paddling in the garden hose. We’d fire up the stove as the light faded, cosy chats over simple suppers – think Cornwall pasties from the local shop in Hayle, or my half-arsed attempt at a seafood linguine with crab from the nearby fishmonger. Laughter echoed round the table, no clocks ticking.

One evening, staring out at the garden bathed in that golden Cornish light, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush – work, school runs, the lot – it all felt miles away. Here, in this perfect pocket of tranquillity, I realised slowing down isn’t lazy; it’s essential. Recharging like this, with family, no plans, just presence? Pure magic. We left fatter, happier, and already plotting a return. If you fancy the same, Hayle’s your spot – trust me.
