Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little corner of Cornwall near Lanivet – we’d packed the car with enough pasties and tea bags to last a siege, only for the sat-nav to chuck a wobbly just past Bodmin. It rerouted us down a narrow lane that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway, and before we knew it, we were proper lost, branches scraping the roof like it was auditioning for a horror film. A quick U-turn (with a bit of light-hearted bickering) and we stumbled out onto the right track, hearts racing but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation. What lay ahead? Who knew, but it already felt like an adventure.

Pulling up to the cottage, my first impressions were spot on – this cosy converted barn, just a stone’s throw from the village, screamed intimate getaway for two. The open-plan studio setup hit you right away with its airy vibe, vaulted ceilings drawing your eye up, and that breakfast bar practically begging for a lazy cream tea. But it was the private decking out back that sealed it – hot tub steaming under the stars, comfy seats for a GandT, and nothing but countryside quiet. We dumped the bags, cracked open a bottle, and just breathed it all in. Pure magic.

Next morning, instead of ticking off the big tourist spots, we let curiosity lead. A wrong turn out of Lanivet took us onto a winding path towards Bodmin Moor – not the main drags, mind, but these hidden tracks where the heather stretched forever and wild ponies eyed us suspiciously. We parked up by a forgotten tarn, boots sinking into the bog as we picnicked with cheese from the village shop. Felt like we’d gatecrashed a secret world, miles from the coach parties.

The real joy was getting lost on foot too. One afternoon, we wandered off down unmarked lanes near the cottage, ending up at this tucked-away woodland glade I swear no map knows about. Sunlight dappled through the trees, a babbling stream perfect for paddling – we spent hours there, skim-reading a dog-eared novel and chatting about nothing. Another day, a “shortcut” to the north coast veered us into a wildflower meadow alive with butterflies, overlooking cliffs that plunged straight to the sea. No crowds, just the roar of waves and us, grinning like idiots.

Evenings were for melting into the hot tub, sore feet forgotten, picking films on the Smart TV before crashing in that massive king bed. It got me reflecting, you know – in the rush of life back home, when do we ever properly switch off? This place forced it, turning accidental detours into the highlights. Sure, we could’ve planned it all, but half the charm was the mishaps, those off-the-beaten-path gems that make Cornwall feel like your private playground. If you’re after tranquillity without the tantrums of overtourism, hunt down a spot like this. You won’t regret getting gloriously lost.
