Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
Pulling up to our little holiday cottage, a cosy detached number right in the heart of things, we were gobsmacked. Fresh, bright, and screaming “relax here forever” with its sea views peeking through every window. We dumped the bags and cracked open a couple of tins, toasting to ditching the daily grind. First impressions? Pure magic – like the place had been waiting just for us. The next few days melted into that perfect couple’s rhythm, all about those simple pleasures that make cottage life so addictive. Mornings kicked off with brekkie on the patio, watching fishing boats bob in the harbour while the gulls squawked for scraps. We’d wander down to the beach at Hannafore – just a short stroll away – paddling in the shallows, skim stones, and pretending we weren’t both rubbish at it. One afternoon, I tried building a sandcastle worthy of the grandkids we don’t have yet, only for the tide to claim it in minutes. “Nature’s revenge,” she chuckled, and we collapsed in hysterics, covered in damp sand. Looe itself is a gem for pottering about. We hit the bustling quay for fresh crab and chips from the stalls – messy, glorious eating straight from the paper, with vinegar dripping everywhere. The chaos of cottage life shone through when the washing machine decided to flood the utility room mid-cycle; cue us mopping up in our pants, turning it into an impromptu dance party with tea towels as maracas. Laughing till our sides hurt – that’s the stuff memories are made of. Evenings were for unwinding back at the cottage, firing up the BBQ (weather permitting, natch) and cracking a bottle of local white while the sun dipped behind the cliffs. One night, sat on the sofa with the windows flung wide to the salty breeze, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life back home’s all rush and lists, but here? It’s the quiet wins – her hand in mine, no agenda, just us being daft together. Made me realise how easy it is to forget that simplicity. We didn’t do grand adventures; no need when the vibe was this chilled. A gentle cliff walk to Portnadler Bay for rock pooling, picking samphire and dodging waves. Chaos? Sure, like when the seagulls dive-bombed our picnic, but it just added to the fun. Leaving felt bittersweet – promised ourselves we’re coming back for more of that unhurried bliss. Cornwall, you’ve got our hearts. |
