Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Praa Sands – that classic Cornish trek from the motorway, winding through those narrow lanes where the hedges scrape the sides of your car if you’re not careful. We’d loaded up the boot with pasties from a service station stop, full of high hopes for a proper seaside escape, when disaster struck: a rogue seagull dive-bombed our windscreen, leaving a Jackson Pollock-style mess of feathers and regret. Laughing through the wipers, we pressed on, my mate Dave muttering about it being an omen for the week ahead. By the time we crested the hill, hearts racing with that fizzy anticipation of arrival, the sight below blew us away – this opulent beachfront gem, right in the thick of it on the Lizard Heritage Coast, with the sea glittering like it was showing off just for us. Steps from Praa Sands Beach, uninterrupted views that made you forget the bird debacle instantly. First impressions? Pure magic.

We’d booked this place for the luxury unwind, but honestly, the real joy came from ditching the guidebooks and letting curiosity lead us astray. Cornwall’s got its tourist traps, but around here, it’s the hidden corners that sneak up on you. First afternoon, we wandered off the beach path, aiming for a quick pint, and stumbled into a secret cove tucked behind Praa Sands – a pebbly inlet called Rinsey Cove, barely a soul in sight. The cliffs loomed dramatic, waves crashing like they were auditioning for a film, and we spent hours beachcombing for sea glass, feeling like proper explorers. Dave found a bit of pottery shard that he swore was smuggler’s loot; I nodded sagely while secretly thinking it was just an old Marmite jar.

Next day, we got properly lost on the coastal path towards Porthleven – not the main drag, mind, but veering off onto sheep-nibbled tracks that twisted inland. Ended up at a wildflower meadow overlooking the sea, alive with butterflies and the hum of bees. Picnicked there with crab sandwiches from the local van we’d clocked by chance, watching seals bob in the distance. It was one of those moments that hit me square – you know, that gentle nudge reminding you life’s too short for itineraries. Here I was, mid-40s, still chasing that kid-like thrill of discovery instead of scrolling emails. Felt bloody good, actually. No filter needed.

Evenings brought more serendipity: a wrong turn led to a cliffside nook near Prussia Cove, where the sun dipped into the Atlantic like a contented sigh. We’d grill fresh mackerel from the fish shack in Porthleven harbour – just a short wander away – and crack open a bottle of Cornish rosé, toasting to the mishaps that got us here. One night, fog rolled in thick, turning our private stretch of beach into a misty dreamscape; we lit a fire pit (cheers to the hosts for that touch) and swapped daft stories till our sides hurt.

Getting lost around Praa Sands isn’t just fun – it’s the soul of the place. Those off-the-beaten-path spots, found by happy accident, make you feel like you’ve unlocked a secret. If you’re after coastal luxury with a side of adventure, this is your spot. We left sunburnt, sandy, and utterly hooked, already plotting the return.
