Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I finally made it to Cornwall after what felt like the world's most chaotic drive down from Bristol. Picture this: me, my other half, and our two kids crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, the satnav cheerfully directing us onto ever-narrower lanes that twisted like a drunkard's scribble. About ten miles from Sennen, disaster struck – a rogue seagull decided our windscreen was its personal canvas, splattering it with what I can only describe as abstract art. We pulled over in a layby near St Just, kids giggling hysterically while I frantically wiped it off with a pack of baby wipes that were decidedly past their best. "Mum, it looks like a Picasso!" my youngest declared, which at least lightened the mood. By the time we got moving again, we were all a bit frazzled, but the anticipation was building – I'd been dreaming of this coastal escape for months.

As we crested the hill approaching Sennen Cove, the first glimpses of the sea hit us like a tonic. There it was, that endless turquoise stretch under a massive sky, with the whitecaps rolling in. We turned into this cluster of swish eco-holiday homes, and honestly, my heart skipped. Ours was one of those beautifully designed spots, all bespoke interiors and quality artwork that made it feel like a proper treat rather than just a rental. Stepping inside after wrestling the suitcases up the path (another minor mishap – one bag's wheel decided to impersonate a shopping trolley with a wonky axle), we were greeted by this bright, open-plan living space that's got this nostalgic ocean vibe going on. Contemporary but cosy, with blues and whites everywhere, it opened right out to views of the cliffs dropping to the beach below. I stood there for a minute, jaw on the floor, while the kids bolted straight for the huge windows, pressing their noses against the glass like excited puppies.

First impressions? Blimey, they don't come much better. We dumped our bags and headed out for a wander down to Sennen Cove – it's only a short stroll, and the sand was golden, the waves perfect for a paddle. Grabbed fish and chips from a beachside van, the kind that's crispy on the outside and flaky perfection within, eaten on the pebbles as the sun dipped low. Back at the house that evening, we sprawled out in the living area, the kids building epic Lego ships inspired by the artwork on the walls, while I cracked open a local gin and tonic, watching the sunset paint the sea in pinks and oranges. There was a quiet moment later, tucking them into bed, when I caught myself reflecting – life's so hectic back home, always rushing about, but here, amid the arrival pandemonium, everything just slowed. That small chaos on the road? It made this feel even more earned, like we'd properly arrived somewhere magical.

The next morning, we were up early for a clifftop walk towards Gwenver Beach, spotting seals bobbing in the waves and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. It's that kind of place where you forget the mishaps and just breathe it all in. If you're after a family getaway that ticks every box – luxury without the pretension, right on Cornwall's doorstep – this is it. Can't wait to go back.
