Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little spot near Praa Sands – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Penzance turned into a proper comedy of errors. Satnav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, directing us down a narrow lane that pinched narrower by the second, with hedges clawing at the car like they were auditioning for a horror film. Then, just as we were congratulating ourselves on escaping without a scrape, we hit a rogue pothole that sent my coffee flying all over the passenger footwell. Cue me, mopping up with a handful of service station napkins while swearing under my breath (quietly, mind, with the kids in the back). By the time we spotted the off-road parking spot with its handy EV charger – a godsend for my electric hatchback – I was frazzled, but buzzing with that holiday anticipation you can’t beat.

Pulling up, though, it was love at first sight. Nestled in this peaceful rural hamlet called Trescowe, the cottage hit us with those great first impressions right away. Quaint exterior framed by mature trees, like something out of a postcard, and we tumbled out of the car grinning despite the chaos. Unlocked the door and stepped into this light, airy open-plan living space – massive patio doors flung open to the garden, tasteful furniture everywhere, and that contemporary extension making it feel modern without losing the cosy cottage vibe. It was renovated to a high standard, no doubt, and perfect for our family of four plus mates tagging along for the weekend.

We dumped the bags and straight away cracked open a round of teas on the patio, the sea breeze whispering promises of beach days ahead. First impressions? Spot on. That garden backed onto countryside views, and within minutes the kids were whooping about exploring the paths to Praa Sands, just 2.4 miles down the road – those golden sands and waves calling like sirens. I had a quiet moment there, sipping my brew, thinking how daft it was getting wound up over a spilled coffee when this was the payoff. Me, the eternal worrier, finally switching off amid the calm.

Next morning, we wandered the nearby coastal paths, nipping over to Praa Sands for a paddle in the chilly Atlantic – proper bracing stuff, but exhilarating. Grabbed pasties from a local spot en route back, devoured them in the garden while plotting a mooch around the countryside trails. Evenings were bliss: barbecues under the trees, board games in that airy living room, and stargazing from the lawn (no light pollution here, it’s magic). One night, a cheeky fox rustled through – sent the dog into a frenzy, but we just laughed from indoors with glasses of wine.

Reflecting on it now, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker, shaking off the daily grind. This place near Praa Sands nailed the balance of coast and countryside – no faffing about with long drives, just pure, unhurried Cornwall. If you’re after a family bolt-hole or mates’ escape, it’s ticking every box. Already plotting a return, minus the coffee carnage.
