Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that little spot near Camelford – the sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just as we hit the A39, sending us on a detour through some narrow lanes that had hedges scraping the sides of the car like an overenthusiastic welcome committee. We arrived a bit later than planned, hearts racing from the near-miss with a rogue tractor, but oh, what a sight greeted us. Nestled quietly in Davidstow, this first-floor open-plan gem felt like stepping into someone’s cosy dream – stylish sitting area by a woodburning stove, opulent kitchen for rustling up feasts, and that wood-fired eco-hot tub promising evenings under the stars. Off-road parking was a godsend after our road woes. From the off, it screamed perfect family pad or couples’ retreat, and I was already plotting lazy mornings with tea in hand.

But it was the locals who turned our stay into pure magic – quirky characters straight out of a seaside yarn. First up was old Bert at the farm shop not five minutes away, who insisted on giving us a guided tour of his pasties while regaling us with tales of the time a cow wandered into the village pub. “Happens every full moon, mark my words,” he winked, pressing free scones into our hands. We chuckled all the way back, devouring them by the stove.

Then there was Maggie from the tearoom in Camelford, a wiry woman with a laugh like a foghorn and stories about her glory days smuggling contraband cream teas past the tourists. Over clotted cream and jam debates (she’s a jam-first purist, naturally), she grilled us on London life before sharing her secret to the best fudge: “Whisper to the sugar while it boils.” We left laden with treats, promising to return.

Evenings brought Trevor, the hot tub neighbour – a retired fisherman with a beard like a bramble bush and eyes twinkling with mischief. Spotting our bubbles from his garden, he popped over with a bottle of scrumpy that could strip paint. “None of that fancy stuff,” he grinned, settling in for a natter about the best spots for kingfishers down by the River Camel. His yarn about outrunning a bull on his bike had us in stitches, feet warming by the stove after.

One quiet moment by the hot tub, staring at the stars, I reflected on how these chats – raw, rambling, full of that Cornish warmth – beat any Instagram backdrop. In a world of rushed holidays, connecting with folks like Bert, Maggie, and Trevor reminded me why we escape: not for the views alone, but the people who make them sing. We left fuller in every sense, already plotting a return to our little haven and its unforgettable crew.
