I’ll never forget the drive down to Penryn in Cornwall – sat nav had me convinced we’d make it in four hours flat, but no, a cheeky cow decided to block the A30 near Bodmin, turning our smooth cruise into a bovine standoff. We honked politely (well, I did; my mate Dave leaned on the horn like it owed him money), and eventually she mooched off, leaving us laughing and late. Still, as we wound into Penryn, that flutter of holiday anticipation kicked in – you know, the bit where you imagine cream teas and sea views without the reality of unpacking.

Pulling up to the lodge, my jaw dropped. It’s this cosy, modern bolthole tucked away with a garden that screams lazy afternoons, all welcoming and just right for a getaway. First impressions? Spot on – felt like home but with better scenery.

But honestly, the real magic was the characters we met, the quirky locals who turned a simple holiday into a proper yarn. First up was Reg, the chap next door who wandered over with a tray of scones before we’d even unpacked. “Jam first or cream first?” he demanded, eyes twinkling like he was testing us. Proper Cornishman, salt-of-the-earth type, born a stone’s throw from Falmouth harbour. We got the full debate – he’s a jam-first diehard, reckons cream-first folk are tourists at heart. Over mugs of builder’s tea in his garden (ours was too pristine to risk crumbs), he regaled us with tales of smuggling his grandad’s “lost” pilchards during the war. “Customs never found the lot!” he chuckled, missing a few teeth but not the point. Made me reflect a bit – back home, neighbours barely nod; here, you’re mates in minutes.

Then there was Tina from the Swan pub down the road in Penryn. We popped in for a pint, and she clocked us as “upcountry” straight away. “You lot from Looerndahn?” she teased, pulling a perfect pint while quizzing us on everything from pasties to past loves. Tina’s a force – runs the bar, knows every gossip from the boatyard to the high street. She spun this epic story about the time the harbour master got stuck in a fishing net during a regatta. “Flapping like a kipper!” We were in stitches, swapping rounds till closing. Her laugh’s infectious, and she slipped us her nan’s recipe for saffron buns on the way out – “Don’t muck it up, mind.”

Even a stroll to the creek brought gems. Old Bert, fishing off the path, hooked us into chat about his “record-breaking” mackerel (three inches, tops). “Bigger than your average politician’s promises,” he winked. We didn’t catch much, but his patter kept us there an hour, debating whether seals or tourists pinched more fish.

Staying put in that lodge meant these encounters felt unhurried, not rushed like a city break. Made me think – we chase far-flung spots, but it’s the locals’ warmth that sticks. Reg waved us off with a “Come again, jam-firsters!” and Tina’s bun recipe’s now my go-to. Cornwall’s not just cliffs and pasties; it’s people like them that make you feel you’ve stumbled into family.
