Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Cornwall – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from Devon turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav decided to play silly buggers, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that made our estate car feel like a tank in a doll’s house. Then, just as we neared Camborne, a rogue seagull dive-bombed the windscreen, leaving us splattered and laughing hysterically while the kids in the back chanted “bird poo apocalypse!” By the time we pulled up, we were all a bit frazzled, bursting for a wee, and covered in crisp crumbs from the emergency snack stop.

But oh, the first glimpse of the place? Absolute magic. Tucked away in a peaceful spot just outside Camborne, this old farm dairy shed has been given a brilliant makeover – celebrating its quirky roots while feeling bang up to date. It’s got that perfect rustic twist with modern comforts everywhere you look: sumptuous sofas you sink into, bespoke little touches that make it feel special, and furnishings so plush I half expected to never leave. We tumbled out of the car, bags flying everywhere, and there it was, welcoming us like an old mate with open arms. The kids spotted the magical ‘den’ straight away – a cosy hideout just for them, complete with twinkly lights and secret nooks that had them whooping before we’d even unlocked the door.

Stepping inside, the chaos melted away. The open-plan living space was bathed in soft light from big windows overlooking rolling fields, and the kitchen was a dream – sleek yet homely, with everything we needed to rustle up a feast. We dumped our stuff and made a beeline for the bubbling hot tub out the back. Under that first twinkling night sky, bubbles fizzing around us, it was pure bliss. I sank in with a glass of local Cornish cider, watching the stars pop out one by one, and thought, “This is it – we’ve struck gold.”

The anticipation on the drive had been building – visions of pasties from the bakery in town, lazy walks along the cliffs at Godrevy, maybe a splash in the sea if the weather played ball. But honestly, those first impressions blew it all out of the water. We pottered about that evening, firing up the barbecue with some fresh mackerel from the nearby fishmonger, the smoky aroma mingling with the sea air. The littles vanished into their den, emerging only for pudding, while we adults soaked it all in.

Looking back, that messy arrival was the perfect icebreaker – a reminder that holidays aren’t about perfection, but those unexpected belly laughs and the sheer joy of arriving somewhere that feels like home from the off. We spent the next few days exploring just a stone’s throw away: a gentle stroll to the beach at Gwithian for sandcastle marathons, popping into Camborne for cream teas that could make you weep with happiness, and evening dips in the hot tub as the sun dipped into the Atlantic. It was one of those stays that recharges your soul, leaving you grinning like a fool. If you’re after a slice of Cornwall that’s equal parts luxury and laid-back charm, hunt down a gem like this – you won’t regret it.
