Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Cornwall last autumn – the leaves turning that gorgeous coppery gold along the A38, with the radio blasting some classic Oasis to keep the spirits high. Me, the wife, our two lads and the dog, all crammed into the car with enough snacks to feed an army. About halfway there, disaster struck: a massive flock of sheep decided to block the road near Bodmin, turning our smooth journey into a 45-minute standoff with a farmer herding them like it was the Grand National. We were all laughing by the end, though – classic British countryside chaos, innit?

By the time we rolled up to the cottage near Liskeard, the late afternoon sun was dipping low, casting this magical amber glow over everything. I’d been buzzing with anticipation all week, picturing cosy fires and crunchy walks, and blimey, it didn’t disappoint. It’s one of those proper quintessentially Cornish farmhouses, all irresistible charm with space for the whole family to sprawl out, including the dog who went mental sniffing every corner. Four big bedrooms meant no squabbles over space, and that alfresco dining spot plus a private hot tub under the stars? Pure bliss.

Autumn in Cornwall is something else – that crisp nip in the air that makes you pull on a jumper but still feel alive, with the hedgerows bursting with blackberries we picked on our first wander down to the local woods. No summer crowds, just us and the rustling leaves, the sea mist rolling in from the coast a few miles off, turning the views hazy and romantic. We timed it perfectly for the season’s highlights: a bracing hike along the clifftops at Looe, where the waves crashed wild and the wind whipped up that salty tang, but we warmed up back at the cottage with steaming mugs of tea and pasties from the village bakery. The lads loved it – kicking through piles of fallen leaves, building dens in the garden while the dog chased squirrels like a furry missile.

Evenings were the best bit, shaped by that autumnal cosiness. We’d fire up the hot tub as the sky darkened early, bubbles fizzing under a canopy of stars you’d never see back home with all the light pollution. One night, we cooked a massive roast in the big kitchen, windows steaming up from the gravy, then spilled out to the terrace wrapped in blankets, toasting marshmallows over a portable fire pit. The air smelled of woodsmoke and damp earth – proper sensory overload.

Funny thing, though – on day three, I slipped on a pile of wet leaves trying to play hero fetching a ball for the dog, ended up flat on my back giggling like an idiot. Made me reflect a bit: rushing about in life, we forget these simple joys, don’t we? That moment, sprawled there with family piling on for a laugh, reminded me why we do these trips. No phones, just us, the season’s embrace, and memories that’ll outlast any Instagram post.

We left with hearts full and cheeks rosy from the chill, already plotting a return. Cornwall in autumn? It’s not just a holiday; it’s a reset button for the soul.
