Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Truro – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, a cool bag stuffed with pasties from the services, and enough board games to survive a siege. My other half, Sarah, was navigating on her phone, insisting we’d shave half an hour off by taking that cheeky shortcut through some villages. Big mistake. We ended up behind a tractor trundling along at snail’s pace, the farmer giving us a cheery wave every time we caught up. I was gripping the wheel, humming along to the radio to keep my cool, but inside I was thinking, “This is it, our romantic getaway starting with a comedy of errors.” Still, as the hedges gave way to those classic Cornish views – rolling fields dipping towards the sea – the anticipation bubbled up. What if this little spot was just the tonic we needed?

Pulling up to the property, we were gobsmacked in the best way. It’s one of those quirky shepherd’s huts tucked away in a peaceful nook, all cosy and compact with a touch of rustic charm that screams “get away from it all.” First impressions? Spot on. The wood-fired hot tub was already steaming gently in the garden, and inside, everything was laid out just so – a snug double bed piled with quilts, a teeny kitchenette begging for a fry-up, and even a fire pit for evenings under the stars. We dumped the bags, cracked open a couple of tins, and just breathed it in. No neighbours in sight, just birdsong and the distant hum of the countryside.

The next few days blurred into that perfect cottage chaos we crave. Mornings kicked off with lazy brews on the deck, watching mist lift off the fields while we debated brekkie – scrambled eggs or beans on toast? We wandered over to the local farm shop not five minutes away, stocking up on clotted cream, fresh scones, and whatever veg looked too good to leave behind. Afternoons were for ambling along the nearby paths, hand in hand, dodging the odd cowpat and laughing about nothing. One evening, I tried my hand at firing up the pizza oven (pro tip: don’t overload it with toppings unless you fancy a charred frisbee). We ended up with gloriously wonky, smoky pizzas devoured by the hot tub, bubbles fizzing around us as the sun dipped low.

There was this one moment of gentle daftness when Sarah slipped on the dew-slick grass chasing a frisbee I’d lobbed too enthusiastically – no harm done, just us in stitches, her covered in mud and me pretending to be the knight in shining armour with a tea towel. It got me reflecting, you know? In the rush of everyday life back home, we forget these simple joys – no screens, no schedules, just us pottering about, making a right mess and loving every second. No grand adventures needed; the chaos of cottage life was the adventure.

By the time we packed up, reluctantly, we were already plotting our return. Cornwall’s got that magic, doesn’t it? A few days in a hut like that, and you’re reset, ready to face the world – or at least the M5 traffic home.
