Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to that tucked-away lodge near Marhamchurch – the satnav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Launceston, sending us on a wild detour through some narrow lanes that had hedges scraping the car like an overenthusiastic hug. We arrived a bit later than planned, hearts racing from the near-miss with a rogue tractor, but oh, what a first impression. Pulling into the designated parking at Whalesborough Resort, there it was: this cosy stand-alone lodge, single-storey and stylish, with its enclosed garden whispering promises of lazy afternoons. Contemporary inside, all open-plan with underfloor heating that felt like a warm welcome, Smart TV, Bluetooth speaker, and a kitchen kitted out for proper pampering – induction hob, dishwasher, wine chiller, the lot. Pets allowed too, which had our two mutts wagging like mad. I could already picture cups of tea and unwinding.

But the real magic? The quirky locals we bumped into, each one a character straight out of a Poldark episode, minus the drama. First up was Derek, the chap at the nearby farm shop just down the road. I popped in for some pasties – proper Cornish ones, mind – and he launches into how his nan’s recipe involves a secret pinch of something “not for the tourists’ ears.” Grinning through his beard, he reckoned the seagulls in Bude were plotting a takeover, nicking chips off unsuspecting walkers on the beach. “They’ve got leaders, you know,” he said with a wink, handing over a pasty still warm from the oven. I laughed so hard I nearly dropped it. Chatting with him felt like slipping into a comfy armchair; he even tipped us off on the best spot for a quiet dip at Widemouth Bay, just a short drive away.

Then there was Maggie from the village pub in Marhamchurch, where we wandered for a pint after settling in. She’s the landlady with stories for days – told us about the time a cow wandered into the beer garden during a folk night, and how the accordion player didn’t miss a beat. “Cornwall’s full of characters like that,” she chuckled, pulling a perfect pint of local ale. “You city folk come here to relax, but it’s us lot who keep you on your toes.” Her tales had us in stitches, from ghostly tales of smugglers on the coast to the annual tractor pull that “nearly ended in the duck pond last year.”

A gentle stroll along the paths near the resort introduced us to old Tom, walking his spaniel. He stopped for a natter about the wildflowers blooming early this year – “global warming or fairy dust, take your pick,” he quipped – and shared how he’d fished these parts since he was knee-high. His easy wisdom made me pause for a bit of self-reflection: rushing through life back home, when had I last just stopped and chatted with a stranger? It was humbling, really.

Those conversations turned our stay into something special – not just the spa vibes or garden barbecues, but the people who made Cornwall feel like family. If you’re after a relaxing escape with a side of laughter, this is the spot. We left with full bellies, fuller hearts, and a promise to return.
