Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Pendeen last summer – me behind the wheel, sat-nav chirping away, and the dog whining in the back because we’d stopped for pasties in Redruth and he’d missed out. About ten miles from our destination, disaster struck: a wrong turn onto some narrow lane that had me convinced we’d end up in the sea. Turns out it was just a cheeky shortcut through a farm, but it left us giggling and a bit late, hearts racing with that proper holiday buzz. As we finally pulled up, though, all was forgiven. This luxurious spot near the coast in this lovely little village blew us away from the off – reverse-level layout with massive windows framing the wild Atlantic, a hot tub begging for evening dips, and a cracking barbecue setup. Two king-size bedrooms (one converts to twins), both comfy and stylish, perfect for our family of four plus the pup. First impressions? Pure magic.

Eager to explore, we didn’t bother with the tourist traps. Instead, we let whimsy lead, and Cornwall rewarded us with hidden gems you’d never find on a map. That first afternoon, fancying a wander, we took a path from the garden that looked promising – or so I thought. Fifteen minutes in, we were properly lost among gorse bushes, the cliffs dropping away dramatically. But stumbling out led us to a secret cove below Pendeen Watch, a pebbly beach with turquoise waves crashing in, empty save for seals barking on the rocks. We picnicked there with cheese and crackers from the local shop, the dog chasing waves like a mad thing. Absolute bliss, and not a soul in sight.

Next day, same vibe: no plans, just ambling. We veered off towards the old lighthouse at Pendeen – you know, the one perched on the cliff edge like it’s defying gravity. But instead of the main path, we followed a faint sheep track that looped us into a forgotten valley. Hidden there? A cluster of wildflower meadows buzzing with butterflies, overlooking Geevor Tin Mine’s ruins – eerie and atmospheric, with the sea mist rolling in. We spent hours poking about, imagining miners’ tales, then barbecued back at the property as the sun dipped, hot tub steaming under the stars. Felt like we’d time-travelled.

The real joy was getting lost like that daily. One evening, chasing a hare down a hedge-lined lane, we discovered Porter’s Cove – a tucked-away harbour where fishermen still mend nets by hand. Chatted with a local who shared fresh mackerel for the barbie; best supper ever. Another time, a wrong turn near Bosorne led to a cliffside nook with rock pools teeming with anemones and crabs – the kids (and me, if I’m honest) turned into giddy explorers, poking about for hours.

Looking back, that mishap on the drive was a sign: the best holidays aren’t plotted, they’re stumbled into. In Pendeen’s quiet corners, we found peace I didn’t know I needed – a gentle nudge to slow down, breathe the sea air, and let the path unfold. If you’re after off-the-beaten-track Cornwall, this is your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
