Our trip to Cornwall staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to our holiday spot near Liskeard – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat-nav insisted we take this winding B-road that narrowed into what felt like a goat track, and just as we hit the unmade lane leading to the place, my little hatchback decided to bottom out on a rut. “Oh brilliant,” I muttered, as we ground to a halt with the undercarriage scraping like a bad itch. We hopped out, hearts racing a bit, and after a few minutes of gentle nudging and a lot of laughing at our city-slicker selves, we coaxed her free. Note to future me: next time, rent something with a bit more clearance!

By the time we bumped up to the coach house, anticipation was bubbling over – we’d been dreaming of this rural escape for weeks, picturing lazy evenings and proper downtime. And blimey, first impressions? Spot on. This detached gem combines luxury and that easy informality you crave on holiday, tucked away in a tranquil spot that feels miles from anywhere, yet handy for a wander. We stepped inside, bags in hand, and were hit with this warm, welcoming vibe straight away. The spacious sitting-dining room is a hug in furniture form – plump sofas begging you to sink in, shelves of books for rainy afternoons, oak bits and bold artwork giving it real character without trying too hard. In the kitchen, that flame-fronted wood-pellet boiler was already drawing us in like a cosy beacon.

We hadn’t even unpacked when we cracked open a bottle of local Cornish cider (grabbed from a farm shop en route) and fired up the wood burner. The flames danced as we sprawled out, the day’s chaos melting away. Dinner was simple – fresh pasties from the village bakery down the road, scoffed right there with views out over the fields. As dusk fell, we couldn’t resist the private hot tub out back. Slipping in post a quick explore of the garden, under a sky turning starry, it was pure bliss. The jets worked their magic on our travel-weary limbs, and we toasted to mishaps that lead to magic.

Next morning, after invigorating showers in one of the two spotless bathrooms, we headed out for a gentle ramble along nearby woodland paths – proper Cornish countryside, with birdsong and that fresh sea-tang breeze drifting in from not too far off. We stumbled on a hidden cove viewpoint within a couple of miles, waves crashing below, and felt that proper holiday glow. Lunched back at the coach house on crab sandwiches from Looe’s harbour stalls (a short hop away), then it was more lounging, a bit of reading, and reflecting on how I’ve spent too long cooped up in the office grind. This place nudged me to slow down, breathe deeper – luxury without the pretence, just right for recharging.

A few days in, and that arrival scrape feels like a funny story already. If you’re after boutique-hotel comfort in a rural idyll, with hot tub perks and space to unwind, this is your spot. We left buzzing, already plotting a return. Cornwall, you’ve done it again.
