Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – we’d set off from London full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav promising a smooth two hours. But no, halfway through, it decided to throw a wobbly and sent us down some narrow lane that looked more like a sheep track. We ended up circling a muddy field for twenty minutes, laughing hysterically as the kids declared it an “adventure detour”. By the time we arrived, I was buzzing with anticipation, wondering if the place would live up to the hype.

Pulling up to this unique architecturally designed home – just 2.9 miles from Moreton-in-Marsh – my heart skipped a beat. Set in a Grade II listed area with stunning panoramic views over the Cotswold National Park, and nestled between Moreton-in-Marsh and the charming village of Blockley, it felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard. Stepping inside, the spacious contemporary kitchen/diner was a godsend – fully equipped for knocking up family feasts, with a lovely spot to gather and chat about the day’s escapades. First impressions? Spot on. It was perfect for us lot, cosy yet roomy.

From there, our holiday turned into a glorious game of getting lost – and I mean that in the best way. We didn’t bother with the tourist traps; instead, we let the winding lanes lead us to hidden gems we’d have never found otherwise. One afternoon, aiming for Blockley (practically on the doorstep), we took a wrong turn and ended up at this tiny, forgotten churchyard tucked behind a hedgerow. Overgrown with wildflowers and complete with a wonky bench, it was pure magic – we picnicked there for hours, the kids inventing ghost stories about the old gravestones. Who needs guided tours when serendipity hands you that?

Another day, we “missed” the path back from a gentle countryside stroll and discovered a secluded wildflower meadow just off the beaten track. It was like the Cotswolds’ secret garden – butterflies everywhere, a babbling stream, and not a soul in sight. We sprawled out, munching apples from a nearby orchard we’d spotted by accident (well, half pinched, half asked permission). Light humour in the air as my partner joked I had the navigation skills of a startled pigeon – fair play, he wasn’t wrong.

Even a simple wander towards Moreton-in-Marsh led us astray into a pocket-sized woodland glade with a hidden pond. Ducks quacking away, sunlight dappling through the trees – we felt like explorers in our own back garden. These off-the-beaten-path finds made the trip; no maps, just instinct and a bit of luck.

Looking back, I realise I’d been so caught up in the daily grind before this, always chasing the next big thing. But getting lost here taught me to slow down, embrace the detours. That’s the Cotswolds for you – it whispers its best secrets to those who stray from the path. We left with full hearts, muddy boots, and plans to return for more accidental wonders.
