Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive up to our holiday spot in the Cotswolds – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. We’d piled into the car in Birmingham, kids buzzing with excitement, me navigating via a dodgy phone signal, and my other half at the wheel nursing a thermos of tea. About halfway there, the sat-nav decided to throw a wobbly, rerouting us down a series of ever-narrowing lanes that had hedges scraping the sides like they were auditioning for a horror film. Then, just as we spotted the first rolling hills, we hit a sheep traffic jam – a flock blocking the road, with a farmer waving his crook like a conductor gone rogue. We sat there giggling and groaning for 20 minutes, munching emergency crisps, while I wondered if this was the universe’s way of saying ‘slow down, you lot’.

By the time we finally trundled into the outskirts of Chipping Campden, the sun was dipping low, painting everything golden, and my anticipation was through the roof. I’d been dreaming of this detached rural retreat for weeks – a sprawling six-bed haven tucked away in a scenic spot, surrounded by that glorious Cotswold countryside. Walking distance from the vibrant market town itself, it promised the perfect base for family shenanigans. Pulling up, though, the arrival was pure chaos. The kids tumbled out first, racing ahead while I wrestled with a boot full of tangled bags and a cool box that had sprung a leak, leaving milky puddles on the gravel. My other half locked the car keys inside – classic move – so there we were, hammering on the door like Keystone Cops until the key safe code worked its magic.

Stepping inside, though? Blimey, what a first impression. It was love at first sight – spacious, cosy, and screaming ‘kick back and relax’. The living areas opened up invitingly, with room for all eight of us to sprawl without tripping over each other, and a kitchen that looked ready for serious feast-making. Upstairs, the bedrooms were a treat, each with that comfy, lived-in feel that makes you sigh with relief. We dumped our stuff and immediately cracked open a bottle of fizz on the patio, gazing out at the rolling fields. The views! Endless green hills stretching away, with Chipping Campden’s honeyed rooftops just visible in the distance. It felt like we’d stumbled into a postcard, mishaps forgotten.

That evening, we wandered into town – it’s such an easy stroll – and poked around the independent shops and pubs. Grabbed fish and chips from a spot on the high street, chatting with locals about the best walks. Next morning, we hit the Cotswold Way trailhead right there in Chipping Campden, meandering through sheep-dotted paths with views that stopped us in our tracks. The kids loved it, charging ahead like explorers, while I lagged behind for a quiet moment of reflection. Holidays like this make you realise how knackered everyday life leaves you – here, with no emails pinging and just fresh air and family, I felt properly recharged. We even cycled a gentle loop towards Broadway’s high street, four miles off, stopping for cream teas that were pure heaven. A little arrival pandemonium aside, this place was spot on – the ultimate rural escape. Can’t wait to go back.
