A pretty village nestled in the Cotswolds, there is plenty of English charm to be found in Castle Combe. It's regularly used as a filming location and a visit makes it clear why. There's plenty of local shops and cafes serving local fare and accomodation is available for overnight stays, many of which are dog friendly.

About Cotswolds
I’ll never forget the drive down to Tetbury in the Cotswolds – a proper British road trip that started with sunshine peeking through the clouds and ended with me cursing my sat-nav as it directed me straight into a muddy farm track just outside town. Typical me, too busy humming along to a playlist of old indie tunes to notice the “no through road” sign until I was ankle-deep in sludge. A quick reverse and a detour through the high street sorted it, though, and suddenly there we were, pulling up to this cosy little apartment on the edge of town. From the first glimpse of its welcoming glow against the rolling hills, I knew we’d struck gold – it felt like slipping into a favourite jumper after a long day.

Tetbury itself is a gem, that thriving market town buzzing around its cracking 17th-century market hall. We’d arrived buzzing with anticipation, dreaming of lazy pub lunches and gentle ambles through the indie shops and antique haunts. But this is the Cotswolds, mate, where the weather calls the shots. Day one dawned crisp and golden, perfect for a hike out to Chavenage House, the Elizabethan manor just a couple of miles away. We parked up and wandered the lanes, leaves crunching underfoot, the air sharp with that autumnal scent. It was pure magic – sheep-dotted fields, drystone walls snaking off into the distance, and not a soul in sight. I even managed a dramatic pose atop a stile for the ‘gram, feeling like a proper explorer.

Come afternoon, though, the skies turned moody, as they do. A sudden downpour had us legging it back, laughing like kids as we dodged puddles the size of ponds. Plans for a longer trek to the National Arboretum at Westonbirt – all those outdoor concerts and winter wonderlands in my head – went out the window. Instead, we holed up in the apartment with tea and biscuits, watching the rain lash the windows. It forced a bit of reflection, didn’t it? I sat there thinking how I’m always chasing the perfect plan, but these curveballs are what make holidays memorable. No epic hikes that day, just cosy chats and a cheeky board game that ended in mock outrage over my wife’s Monopoly domination.

Next morning, the weather played nice again – blue skies, a gentle breeze – so we laced up for a stomp around the Cotswold Water Park edges, just a short drive away. Paths wound through wetlands teeming with birds, the kind of spot where you half-expect to spot a kingfisher darting by. We pushed on towards Slimbridge’s wildfowl reserve, the mud squelching under boots, spotting ducks and geese in their hundreds. But wouldn’t you know it, by noon the clouds rolled in thick and fast, turning our sunny saunter into a soggy sprint. Umbrellas inside out, hoods up, we trudged back grinning like idiots. That’s the British weather for you – one minute paradise, the next a comedy of errors.

Still, those hikes, rain or shine, were the highlight. Tetbury’s doorstep feels like it’s made for them: quiet trails linking pubs, parks, and those hidden viewpoints that stop you in your tracks. We didn’t make it to the big events like the Badminton horse trials or Cirencester polo – too busy dodging showers – but who needs that when you’ve got impromptu weather adventures? Left me pondering how a bit of unpredictability keeps life lively. If you’re after a proper Cotswolds escape, pack your wellies and embrace the lot – it’s brilliant.
