About Cotswolds
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – me, my partner, and our scruffy terrier, Monty, crammed into the car with the sat-nav stubbornly insisting we take a detour through some godforsaken B-road. We’d been buzzing with that holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you imagine cosy evenings and epic walks, but then Monty decided to have a mid-journey panic and knocked my thermos of tea all over the passenger footwell. Cue soggy socks and a lot of giggling as we pulled into the private parking spot, finally spotting our little home-from-home.

First impressions? Blimey, it was spot on. We wandered into this cracking kitchen-living room setup – washing machine, tumble dryer, dishwasher, the lot – perfect for us lot with a dog in tow. I whipped up a quick pasta while we cracked open a bottle of wine, then flopped onto the plush sofa for a Netflix binge on the Smart TV. Come bedtime, that super-king bed was pure bliss; Monty curled up at our feet like he owned the place.

But the real magic of the Cotswolds isn’t the honey-pot spots everyone raves about – it’s the hidden gems you stumble on when you get properly lost. That first morning, we set off for a wander near Cheltenham, no map, just Monty leading the way with his nose in the air. We ended up on this winding footpath that spat us out at a tucked-away picnic spot by a babbling brook I’d never heard of. Blankets down, cheese sarnies out – it felt like we’d gatecrashed someone’s secret garden. Pure luck, but what a find.

The next day, aiming for a gentle hike, we took a wrong turn down a lane that narrowed into oblivion. Monty was in his element, sniffing every hedge, and suddenly there we were at this off-the-beaten-track wildflower meadow, alive with butterflies and not a soul in sight. We sprawled out for hours, watching clouds drift by. I had one of those gentle moments of reflection then – you know, how we’re always rushing about back home, glued to screens? Here, getting lost meant finding peace, reminding me to loosen the reins a bit more often.

Afternoon brought another accidental treasure: a detour through sleepy lanes revealed a minuscule tea room tucked behind a hedgerow, run by a cheery old chap who served the fluffiest scones with clotted cream you could dream of. No tourists, just locals nattering. We polished off cream teas and pottered back, Monty trailing crumbs.

Our last evening, we got lost again – on purpose this time – and discovered a shady orchard path leading to a forgotten viewpoint over rolling fields. Sunset there, wine in hand (smuggled from the flat), was the perfect capper. Staying here taught me the Cotswolds’ best bits aren’t signposted; they’re for those daft enough to wander off-piste. If you fancy ditching the crowds for your own quirky adventures, grab the dog lead and go get lost. You won’t regret it.
