About Cotswolds
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – we’d packed the car to the brim with wellies, board games, and enough snacks to feed a small army, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. Just as I was starting to mutter about why we hadn’t taken the train, we rounded a bend and there it was: our little haven, a delightful cottage sympathetically restored with style to provide the perfect weekend escape and ideally located as a base for a longer stay exploring all the Cotswolds has to offer. The sight of it nestled quietly in Lower Oddington, with that golden light hitting the garden, melted away any travel grumps. First impressions? Pure magic. I could already picture us kicking back with cups of tea, far from the daily grind.

We’d come for a proper family unwind – me, my other half, and our two lads, aged 8 and 10, who were buzzing like puppies let off the lead. Unloading was the usual chaos: bags tumbling out, the youngest tripping over a welly, and a rogue bag of crisps exploding across the gravel. But stepping inside? Bliss. The place felt like a warm hug – cosy corners perfect for curling up, a kitchen that begged for lazy breakfasts, and enough space for everyone to breathe without treading on toes.

Our first morning kicked off with a stroll to nearby Daylesford, just a hop away, where we mooched around the organic farm shop, picking up fresh loaves and cheeses that made our picnic dreams come true. The boys darted about the orchards, pretending they were explorers, while we parents snuck a coffee in the barn café. Back at the cottage, it was all about simple joys: firing up the Aga for a spot of baking (my attempt at scones turned out more like rock buns, mind you – gentle reminder to stick to my day job), and letting the kids loose in the garden with a frisbee and some sticks for lightsaber battles.

Afternoons blurred into gentle rambles along the paths around Oddington, spotting sheep in the fields and wildflowers nodding in the breeze. One evening, we walked over to the Fox Inn in Broadwell – a proper local pub with hearty ploughman’s and a garden where the lads could run off steam. No fancy plans, just that easy rhythm of cottage life: reading by the window as rain pattered down, building dens from cushions, and sharing daft stories over shepherd’s pie I actually managed not to burn.

Looking back, it was those little hiccups – the muddy boots tracked through the hall, the great sock hunt after a day out – that made it special. In the rush of school runs and work emails, I’d forgotten how restorative this kind of break can be. No screens, no schedules, just us, a bit of family mayhem, and the Cotswolds working its quiet charm. We left with fuller hearts and a promise to return – next time, maybe without the sat-nav rebellion.
