Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – we’d been buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation, you know, the kind where you’ve got the playlist sorted and the kids (well, our two lads, aged 10 and 12) chattering about exploring. But about 20 miles out, disaster struck: a rogue sheep decided our SatNav route was prime grazing territory. Cue a 15-minute detour through some winding lanes, me white-knuckling the wheel while my husband Dave tried to calm everyone with dad jokes. “At least it’s not a cow – we’d be proper jammed!” We arrived laughing, a bit windswept, but utterly charmed by Little Rissington’s sleepy vibe as we pulled up outside this stylish holiday home on a working farm just a couple of miles from Bourton-on-the-Water.

First impressions? Blimey, it was love at first sight. Parked right outside, we stepped through to the porch – perfect for kicking off muddy wellies – and into this cracking open-plan living space. Plush sofas begging for a collapse, a smart TV for lazy evenings, and a coffee maker that had me brewing up before I’d even unpacked. Floor-to-ceiling windows framed these lush rural views, like the countryside was putting on a private show. It felt like instant home, the sort of place that whispers “relax” from the off.

We were there for a laid-back family break, just the four of us soaking up cottage life’s simple joys – and the inevitable chaos. Mornings kicked off with brekkie chaos: me flipping pancakes while the boys raided the fridge, Dave nursing his coffee and pretending to read the paper. Then we’d wander the farm paths, spotting lambs and chatting to the farmer about his lot – proper rural immersion without the full-on farmhand graft. A short hop to Bourton-on-the-Water was our daily ritual; that village is magic, with its bridges over the bubbling River Windrush and model village that had the lads wide-eyed like it was Disneyland shrunk down.

Afternoons were for gentle ambles – we hit the village shop for pasties and local cheese, then sprawled in the garden with a picnic, watching clouds drift. One hilarious low point: attempting a family board game night that descended into lads vs parents war, complete with fake outrage and spilled crisps everywhere. “You cheated, Dad!” they hollered. Pure joy. Evenings meant cosying up with takeaways from the local pub – fish and chips or a curry, devoured on those sofas while bingeing a kid-friendly series.

Looking back, it was one of those trips that nudged me into gentle self-reflection. Amid the Cotswolds’ honeyed calm, I realised how we’d let life’s rush overshadow these bits – no screens dictating the day, just us lot muddling through with laughter and a bit of lovely disorder. No grand adventures needed; the charm was in the quiet rhythm of it all. If you’re after that unhurried family escape, this corner of Gloucestershire delivers in spades. We’re already plotting a return – sheep blockades permitting.
