Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down from London to the Cotswolds – it started so promisingly with the M4 humming along, but then we hit that classic bit of roadworks just past Swindon. Queue for miles, and me fiddling with the sat-nav while my other half dozed off. By the time we escaped, we were proper late, and I was convinced we’d end up in some random field. But oh, the anticipation built as those rolling hills came into view, all lush and inviting. We were buzzing for a cosy break in a sweet little holiday cottage near Cirencester, the kind with a welcoming garden and that perfect rural charm.

Pulling up at last, we were gobsmacked – first impressions were spot on. The cottage was this adorable detached gem, all snug and characterful, with a garden that screamed lazy afternoons. We dumped the bags and cracked open a bottle of fizz on the patio, toasting our survival of the traffic apocalypse. Little did we know, the real magic was in ditching the map and just wandering.

First mishap turned gold dust the very next morning. We set off for a “quick” stroll to Cirencester’s market, but took a wrong turn down a leafy lane – classic us. Instead of panicking, we embraced it and stumbled on this hidden pocket of bliss: a tucked-away wildflower meadow by the River Churn, carpeted in butterflies and not a soul in sight. We picnicked there for hours, feet dangling in the water, chatting nonsense. Felt like we’d gatecrashed a secret garden party.

That set the tone. We kept getting “lost” on purpose after that, veering off the beaten paths around the local farms. One afternoon, aiming for nowhere in particular, we found ourselves on a footpath through ancient woodland – proper off-the-radar stuff, with sunlight dappling through the trees and the air thick with bluebells. Ended up at a tiny, forgotten picnic spot by a bubbling brook, where we scoffed cheese and biscuits from the village shop. No tourists, no fuss, just us and the birdsong. Hilarious moment when I slipped on some mud trying to pose for a photo – emerged looking like a swamp monster, but we laughed till our sides hurt.

Another gem? A accidental detour led to this secluded viewpoint overlooking hidden valleys, the sort you’d never spot on a guidebook. We watched the sun dip low, sheep dotting the hills like fluffy clouds. Pure poetry. Back at the cottage each evening, we’d flop into those comfy armchairs, supping tea and plotting the next wander. No grand plans, just serendipity.

Looking back, it’s funny how the best bits come from cocking up the directions. In our rush-rush lives, we rarely let ourselves get lost like that – it’s a gentle nudge that slowing down uncovers the real treasures. If you’re heading to the Cotswolds, skip the hotspots and let the lanes lead you. Those hidden corners? They’ll steal your heart. We’re already plotting a return.
