A pretty village nestled in the Cotswolds, there is plenty of English charm to be found in Castle Combe. It's regularly used as a filming location and a visit makes it clear why. There's plenty of local shops and cafes serving local fare and accomodation is available for overnight stays, many of which are dog friendly.

Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – we’d packed the car with enough snacks to feed a small army, dreaming of cosy cottage evenings, only for the sat-nav to chuck us into a cheeky detour through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel. A sheep decided to photobomb our progress by strolling right in front of us, forcing a hasty brake that sent crisps flying everywhere. Typical us, turning a straightforward journey into mild chaos, but by the time we trundled through those secure gates opposite the Westonbirt National Arboretum, just 2.4 miles from Sherston, all was forgiven. The anticipation had been building – visions of rolling hills and proper downtime – and pulling up to this semi-detached gem from 1865, carefully done up into a proper inviting home for the two of us, well, it was love at first sight. Off-road parking sorted, and bless them, an electric charge point for my little hybrid. First impressions? Spot on.

Stepping inside felt like slipping into a warm hug. The sitting room was our instant favourite – that woodburning stove begging to be lit, toes curling up in front of it later with mugs of tea, and a massive Samsung Smart TV for lazy binge-watching. We dumped the bags and wandered through to the kitchen/diner, all glossy units and gadgets galore: washer/dryer, dishwasher, the lot. It was modern without shouting about it, perfect for knocking up a simple pasta while chatting about nothing much. No kids this time, just me and Sarah on a chilled couple’s break, and it hit me right there – how often do we actually switch off? This place was made for it.

The next few days blurred into that glorious cottage rhythm. Mornings started with a potter around Westonbirt Arboretum, just a hop across the way – we wandered those ancient tree trails, leaves crunching underfoot, holding hands like daft teenagers and laughing at how I kept mistaking oaks for maples. Lunch was a picnic of local cheeses from the Sherston farm shop (their mature cheddar is dangerously moreish), sprawled on a blanket with the sun peeking through. Afternoons meant ambling to nearby Westonbirt village paths, spotting rabbits and breathing in that crisp Gloucestershire air. Back at the cottage, chaos ensued in the best way: I burned the toast trying to master the fancy toaster, Sarah bossed a roast chicken dinner with veg from the garden (okay, mostly shop-bought, but who’s counting?), and evenings dissolved into stove-lit bliss, debating films until we nodded off on the sofa.

One night, staring into the flames, I had a proper moment of reflection. Life’s mad rush back home – deadlines, emails, the lot – feels a world away here. We’re just two people rediscovering the joy in small things: a shared laugh over spilt wine, the quiet of starlit walks, no agenda beyond a brew and a cuddle. Sure, the odd sock left on the floor or my hopeless attempt at log-chopping added to the fun disorder, but that’s cottage life, innit? It’s messy, real, and utterly restorative. If you’re after a slice of Cotswolds calm for a couple’s getaway, this is your spot – we’re already plotting a return.
