Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – or rather, the comedy of errors that got us there. We’d set off from Bristol full of beans, sat-nav pinging away, dreaming of rolling hills and cosy pubs. But no, halfway through, the heavens opened, turning the motorway into a proper car park. Then, just as we veered off towards Westonbirt, I missed the turning for the secure gates – twice. Cue me swearing under my breath (well, a bit louder than that) while my other half helpfully suggested we were lost in Narnia. By the time we finally nosed through those gates and parked up, we were soaked, frazzled, and laughing like loons. Unloading the boot felt like a scene from a Carry On film: bags tumbling out, one rolling into a puddle, and me slipping over my own wellies. What a start!

Still, as we kicked off our muddy boots in the porch and stepped inside, all that chaos melted away. First impressions? Blimey, they were spot on. This one-bedroom holiday home is a proper gem, nestled right in the heart of the Cotswolds greenery, just a quick hop from Sherston. It’s got that perfect mix of old-school charm and modern flair – think plush sofas you sink into and a kitchen that’s kitted out better than ours at home. The open-plan living space is an absolute dream, flooded with light from those massive bi-fold doors that open straight out to the garden. We stood there for a good five minutes, jaws dropped, taking it all in. After the drive from hell, it felt like we’d stumbled into our own little slice of heaven.

We wasted no time settling in. Brewed a cuppa (essential after that downpour), then flopped on the sofa with a sigh of relief. The anticipation on the journey had been building – I’d been banging on about escaping the daily grind for weeks – and it didn’t disappoint. That first evening, we cracked open a bottle of wine, watched the sunset paint the fields gold, and just breathed. No emails, no deadlines, just us and this cracking spot.

The next morning, we laced up cleaner boots and wandered out for a gentle stroll around Westonbirt. The village paths are pure magic, winding through woods that smell like fresh earth and possibility. We popped into a nearby farm shop – only a couple of miles away – for local cheeses and bread that tasted like it was baked that morning. Lunched at a quaint tearoom in Sherston, where the scones were fluffy towers of joy, slathered in clotted cream. Afternoon was lazy: back at the house, reading in the sun-drenched living room, with birdsong filtering through the doors. I caught myself reflecting, mid-page-turn – when did life get so hectic? This place was a gentle nudge to slow down, savour the simple stuff.

By nightfall, after a pub dinner in the village (fish and chips that hit the spot), we were tucked up cosy. Sure, the arrival was a right faff, but it made the first impressions all the sweeter. If you’re after a romantic bolt-hole for two, with walks on the doorstep and that warm glow of home-from-home, this is it. We left buzzing, already plotting a return. What a way to recharge.
