Our trip to Cotswolds staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to the Cotswolds – a proper British road trip gone slightly pear-shaped. We’d set off from London full of beans, sandwiches packed and the sat-nav chirping away, but halfway there, just past Oxford, we hit the mother of all traffic jams. Turned out some sheep had decided the M40 was prime grazing territory. An hour later, we were back on track, hearts sinking a bit as the sun dipped low, but buzzing with that holiday anticipation. Would the place live up to the photos? As we wound through those narrow lanes towards Bourton-on-the-Hill, the countryside unfolding like a postcard, I could already feel the tension melting away.

Pulling up to this stunning, spacious house, my jaw dropped. Set right in the fabulous Cotswold countryside and only 10 minutes from the country’s most picturesque honey stone villages like Stow-on-the-Wold, Chipping Campden and Broadway, it screamed luxury living without a whiff of pretension. First impressions? Spot on. We tumbled inside, bags dumped, kettle on, and just soaked it in – the perfect base for what we hoped would be epic walks.

Day one dawned bright and crisp, the kind of autumn morning that begs for boots and a brisk hike. We headed out from the doorstep straight into the rolling hills, following public footpaths that snake through fields dotted with fluffy sheep. The air was alive with that fresh, earthy scent, and we powered up to the Iron Age hill fort at Dover’s Hill – all panoramic views over the valleys, with not a soul in sight. I felt like a proper explorer, striding along with a daft grin, stopping only for a cheeky flask of tea and a biscuit. Lunch was a picnic in a sun-dappled meadow, laughing about how we’d earned every calorie.

But oh, the British weather – it’s got a wicked sense of humour, doesn’t it? By day two, the skies turned moody, a fine drizzle that turned into a proper downpour mid-morning. Our grand plan for a long ramble to Broadway Tower? Scrubbed. Instead, we adapted like pros, donning waterproofs for a shorter loop around the local lanes near Bourton-on-the-Hill. Muddy paths, yes, and one hilarious slip where I ended up on my bum in a puddle (note to self: invest in better grip), but it was brilliant. The rain freshened everything up, turning the hedgerows vibrant green, and we spotted a fox darting across the trail. Cosy mugs of soup back at the house never tasted so good.

The next day flipped the script again – blue skies! We tackled the Monarch’s Way path towards Blockley, weaving through ancient woodlands where the leaves crunched underfoot. It was gentler terrain, perfect for chatting and reflecting. I got a bit wistful up there, thinking how these walks strip everything back. No emails, no deadlines, just the rhythm of your steps and the wind in your hair. Makes you realise how rare it is to properly switch off.

Even on our last soggy stomp – a quick circuit back via Chipping Campden’s edges before checkout – the weather’s whims kept us on our toes. That’s the Cotswolds for you: unpredictable hikes that turn into the best stories. If you’re after a spot for leg-stretching adventures with a luxury pad to crash in, this is it. I’m already plotting a return – next time, with extra socks.
