Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to this little spot on the edge of Exmoor – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the M5 turned into a proper comedy of errors. Sat nav decided to play silly buggers halfway through, directing us down a single-track lane that pinched narrower by the second, with hedges clawing at the car like they were auditioning for a horror film. Then, just as we spotted the hamlet of East Knowstone peeking through the mist, a rogue pheasant shot out in front of us, forcing an emergency brake that sent my thermos of tea flying across the dashboard. Soggy map and all, we finally pulled up, hearts racing, both laughing like loons at the sheer daftness of it.

But oh, stepping out onto that gravel drive? Pure magic. This detached barn conversion – thoughtfully put together by the owner, with not a single detail overlooked – hit us like a warm hug after the chaos. Nestled right on the fringe of peaceful East Knowstone, it felt like we’d stumbled into our own private slice of rural bliss. The first impressions were spot on: cosy outdoor seating begging for a cuppa, and those stunning views stretching out towards the wilds of Exmoor National Park, just begging to be explored on foot or by bike. We dumped the bags and immediately cracked open a window to let in the fresh air – proper countryside scent, all damp earth and wildflowers.

Anticipation had been building all week, you know? Scrolling through photos of the area, dreaming of lazy walks and pub lunches. And it didn’t disappoint from the off. That very first evening, after shaking off the travel gremlins, we wandered the short two-mile stroll to the 13th-century inn nearby – a gem of a place with hearty bar snacks and specials that hit the spot after our ‘adventurous’ arrival. Sat in the flickering candlelight, pint in hand, I couldn’t help but chuckle at how we’d nearly bottled it on the road. Makes you reflect, doesn’t it? We’re so wired for the rush these days, yet here was this perfect couple’s retreat reminding me to slow down, breathe deep, and let the simple stuff – like a mishap-free mooch around the hamlet – recharge the batteries.

Next morning, first impressions held strong as we laced up boots for a gentle tramp along Exmoor’s edges. Rabbits darting about, buzzards overhead – it’s that awe-inspiring landscape you read about, but better up close. We pottered to nearby spots within a stone’s throw, like the charming paths around East Knowstone, soaking it all in without a care. No grand plans, just us, the barn’s inviting glow calling us back for elevenses. Honestly, after that bumpy start, it’s become the holiday benchmark – chaotic arrival and all. If you’re after a proper unplug in Devon’s heart, this is it. Can’t wait to go back.
