Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
I’ll never forget the drive down to Ilfracombe – sat nav insisted on taking us through some godforsaken back lane that turned into a single-track mudfest after a sneaky shower. We ended up with a wing mirror kissing a hedge and me swearing at the wheel like a proper numpty. But as we crested the hill and spotted the sea glittering on the horizon, all was forgiven. There it was, our beautiful barn conversion, tucked away just a short drive from the Victorian charm of Ilfracombe itself. First impressions? Blimey, it was even cosier than the photos – the kind of place that wraps you up like a warm pasty.

No sooner had we unpacked than we wandered into town for a mooch. Ilfracombe’s got this brilliant vibe with its eclectic independent shops and galleries, and it wasn’t long before we bumped into Madge, the owner of a tiny art shop crammed with driftwood sculptures. She’s this wiry septuagenarian with a laugh like a foghorn, regaling us with tales of how she once chased off a fox that nicked her best seagull carving. “You lot from up country?” she asked, eyeing our London plates. We nodded, and she launched into a monologue about the “proper” way to spot seals off the harbour – “None of your fancy apps, love, just listen for the grunts!” We left with a wonky whale ornament and a belly laugh.

The next day, we hit the coastal path for a rugged walk – those North Devon cliffs are proper dramatic, with the wind whipping your hair into knots. At a bench overlooking the waves, we met Terry, a retired fisherman with a beard like a Brillo pad and stories for days. He’d spent decades hauling pots from Lundy Island, visible right there on the horizon. “Fancy a trip over?” he grinned, pointing to the MS Oldenburg chugging out from the harbour. Turned out he knew the skipper from way back and reckoned we’d spot puffins and seals galore. We booked it on the spot, and over cream teas later (jam first, obviously), he quizzed us on city life. “All that rushing about – why bother when you’ve got Exmoor on your doorstep?” Fair point, Terry.

Even the beach trips to Woolacombe and Saunton Sands – those golden stretches just a quick drive away – turned into character encounters. There was cheeky Dave at the surf hut, a tanned local with a ponytail who claimed he’d taught Prince Harry to bodyboard back in the day. “Don’t believe the hype, he wiped out spectacularly!” We spent an afternoon paddling, him shouting tips while his spaniel nipped at our heels. And at a National Trust garden nearby, eccentric Edith pressed wildflower crowns on us, whispering conspiratorially about her “fairy ring” that brings good luck to walkers.

Staying there made me reflect a bit – back home, I’m always chasing deadlines, but chatting with these quirky locals, time just slowed. Madge, Terry, Dave, Edith... they’re the real heartbeat of North Devon. No wonder Ilfracombe feels like a cultural gem, with its theatre and all. If you’re after proper holiday magic – walks, beaches, and characters who stick with you – this barn’s your spot. We’re already plotting a return.
