Our trip to Devon staying in a holiday cottage with Hut Tub
First impressions? Blimey, they knocked it out of the park. This cracking holiday home—a proper barn conversion done up with real flair—sat snug in its enclosed garden bursting with late-season flowers and those unexpected palm trees swaying gently. The owners have spared no attention to detail, making it an ideal spot for mates or families. We arrived to the scent of damp earth and woodsmoke, the hot tub already steaming invitingly under a canopy of amber foliage, fire pits ready for toasting marshmallows, and an outside dining area that screamed al fresco evenings, even as the days grew shorter. Autumn shaped every minute of our stay, turning the ordinary into something special. Mornings started misty, with dew clinging to spiderwebs like fairy lights, perfect for a wander around the garden before breakfast. We’d fire up the pit mid-afternoon, flames crackling against the cooling air, roasting chestnuts while the sun dipped low, painting everything in that honeyed light. One evening, as leaves swirled in a gentle breeze, we slipped into the hot tub—pure bliss after a day out, bubbles fizzing as the temperature dropped. It felt like the season was wrapping us in its arms, all crunchy walks and that fresh, earthy smell after rain. We didn’t stray far, keeping it local to soak up the North Devon autumn vibes. Bude’s just 11 miles away, its vast sandy beaches transformed into dramatic seascapes with waves crashing under grey skies—ideal for a bracing cliff-top stroll along the rugged coastline, coats flapping, cheeks rosy from the wind. We timed it for low tide, picking our way over rocks dotted with seaweed, spotting seals bobbing offshore. Families with littluns would love the nearby adventure spots like The Milky Way (14 miles) or The Big Sheep (17 miles), though we opted for quieter pursuits—think woolly jumpers and hot pasties from Bude’s indie cafes. Clovelly’s donkey paths were a highlight too, those steep cobbled streets lined with fiery foliage, huffing up for the views. Even a splash at North Devon Aqua Wake park (14 miles) felt seasonal, the chill water making the hot chocolate afterwards taste heavenly. Looking back, that little mishap on the road was a gift—it reminded me to slow down and savour these moments. Autumn here isn’t just a season; it’s a full-on embrace of cosy chaos, wild coasts, and simple joys. If you’re after a proper North Devon getaway, this place in its garden paradise delivers, especially when the leaves are falling. We’re already plotting a return. |
