About Devon
I’ll never forget the drive down to Torcross in Devon – what should’ve been a straightforward jaunt from the motorway turned into a proper comedy of errors. Picture this: me, sat-nav in hand, convinced I knew better than the robotic voice droning on about “recalculating”. We missed the turning for the A379, ended up on some narrow lane that felt more like a sheep’s personal runway, and then – bang – a rogue pothole sent my thermos of tea flying right into the footwell. Soggy socks and a mild panic later, we finally spotted the sea glinting ahead, and my heart lifted. Devon’s got that magic, doesn’t it? Even mid-mishap, you can feel the holiday vibe creeping in.

Pulling up to the apartment, I was buzzing with that proper arrival anticipation – you know, the bit where you imagine kicking back with a cuppa, feet up, waves crashing nearby. It’s a cosy ground-floor number in a low-rise block right on the beachfront, all fresh and modern with big windows that scream “stare at the sea all day”. First impressions? Blimey, it exceeded expectations. Stepping inside, the open-plan living space hit me like a warm hug – neutral tones, plush sofas, and a kitchen kitted out enough to rustle up a full English without breaking a sweat. The sea view from the lounge? Straight out to Start Bay, with the waves lapping just beyond the promenade. I dumped the bags and made a beeline for the balcony doors, grinning like an idiot as the salty breeze hit my face.

Of course, the arrival chaos didn’t end there. Unpacking, I realised I’d left the kids’ beach toys back in the car boot – buried under a landslide of welly boots and picnic gear from the drive. Cue a frantic rummage in the car park, drawing stares from a couple walking their spaniel. Laughing it off, we finally settled in, cracking open a bottle of local cider from the offy down the road. That first evening, we wandered all of two minutes to the beach – proper golden sands stretching towards Beesands, with the sun dipping low over the sea. We paddled in the shallows, dodging the chilly waves, and I had one of those gentle moments of self-reflection: here I was, mid-40s, still getting soppy over a sunset like I was 20 again. Life’s too short not to chase these simple joys, eh?

Next morning, the apartment felt even more like home. Brewed coffee on the balcony while watching fishing boats bob about, then a short stroll to the local shop for pasties – none of your pasty chain rubbish, proper proper ones, flaky and steaming. We mooched along the coastal path towards Hallsands, spotting seals lounging on the rocks (or were they just rocks? Holiday eyes playing tricks). The place is spot-on for that laid-back Devon vibe – no need to drive anywhere, everything’s on your doorstep. Even the little mishaps faded into funny anecdotes over fish and chips from the takeaway nearby, eaten back on the balcony as the tide rolled in.

Honestly, if you’re after a no-fuss seaside escape, this is it. Torcross has that unpretentious charm – quiet lanes, cracking walks, and sunsets that make you forget the drive-time disasters. We didn’t want to leave, and I’m already plotting a return. Cheers to chaotic arrivals and perfect first impressions!
