About Devon
I finally made it to Devon after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. The sat-nav decided to have a midlife crisis just past Exeter, rerouting us through some narrow lanes that had me white-knuckling the wheel while my mate Dave yelled directions from a crumpled map. We arrived at Hope Cove just as the sun dipped low, hearts racing but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you're starving and dreaming of fish and chips by the sea.

Pulling up to this luxurious first-floor apartment, I was chuffed to bits. It's cool and comfortable, oozing coastal style with high-end furnishings and decor offering the ultimate in relaxed holiday living. From the balcony, you get those cracking views over the cove, waves crashing below like they're putting on a show just for you. First impressions? Spot on. We dumped the bags and cracked open a couple of cold ones, toasting to no more traffic jams.

Food became our religion from the off. That first evening, we wandered down to The Hope and Anchor, the pub right in the heart of the village. Proper gem—cosy as anything, with locals nursing pints and swapping tall tales about storms past. I went for the fresh mackerel, caught that morning, grilled to perfection with a side of samphire that tasted like the sea itself. Dave demolished a massive seafood platter, all plump prawns and mussels in garlic butter. We washed it down with a local Otter Ale, chatting bollocks till closing time. Blimey, my waistline didn't stand a chance.

Next morning, I fancied playing masterchef in the swish kitchen. The apartment's got all the gear—proper knives, a cracking oven—so I nipped to the fresh produce stall in the cove's car park market. Nothing fancy, just seasonal veg, artisan bread, and the plumpest tomatoes you've ever seen. I attempted a Devonshire pasty from scratch, following some dodgy recipe on my phone. Let's just say it was more brick than pastry; Dave took one bite and pretended it was gourmet while choking down a surreptitious biscuit. Laugh? We howled. Self-reflection moment: I'm brilliant at eating, rubbish at cooking. Lesson learned—stick to takeaways next time.

Lunches were beach picnics sorted from the village shop: crab sandwiches on crusty rolls, Cornish pasties (store-bought, obviously), and local cheeses that could make you weep. Evenings? Back to the pubs. The Pig's Nose in nearby Thurlestone (a quick stroll away) did the best Sunday roast—succulent beef, Yorkshire puds like clouds, and veg roasted in dripping. We timed it perfectly, stuffing ourselves silly while watching the footy on their telly.

One highlight was cooking a proper seafood feast after a market haul: langoustines from the fisherman's van, flash-fried with chilli and garlic. The apartment's setup made it dead easy, and scoffing it on the balcony with the sunset? Pure bliss. We even tried clotted cream on scones for pud, slathered thick—heart attack on a plate, but worth every calorie.

By the end of the week, we'd mapped every eatery within spitting distance, from the Cove's chippy (battered cod heaven) to hidden gem cafes doing cream teas. It's the simple stuff that sticks—good grub, great mates, and that satisfied glow after a bellyful. If you're after a holiday where the highlights are all forkfuls of joy, this corner of Devon delivers in spades. Can't wait to go back.
