About Devon
I finally made it to that cosy little holiday cottage near South Molton after what felt like the scenic route from hell. I'd set off from Bristol full of beans, Spotify playlist blasting folk tunes to get me in the Devon mood, but oh no, the satnav decided to play silly buggers about ten miles out. It directed me down a narrow lane that was more puddle than path after all that recent rain, and I ended up with my little hatchback wedged against a hedge, wheels spinning uselessly in the mud. Heart in mouth, I reversed out gingerly, cursing my lack of 4x4 foresight, and after a few wrong turns and a quick call to the owners for directions, I spotted the place just as the sun dipped low over the rolling fields.

Pulling up, I was knackered but buzzing with that proper holiday anticipation—you know, the kind where you imagine kicking back with a cuppa and no emails. The cottage is one of those classic stone-built numbers, all quaint and tucked away in a peaceful spot with views that make you go "wow" straight away. First impressions? Bloody brilliant, even through my arrival chaos. The garden was a riot of wildflowers, buzzing with bees, and there was this welcoming porch light glowing like it knew I'd had a faff getting there. I fumbled the key in the lock, hands muddy from my earlier hedge wrestle, and stepped into a warm, homely living room with a wood burner ready for action and squishy sofas begging for a collapse.

Dumping my bags, I pottered straight to the kitchen—properly equipped with everything from cafetière to chopping boards—and rustled up a bacon sarnie to celebrate survival. The windows framed the North Devon countryside perfectly, all lush green hills and distant sheep, and I couldn't stop grinning at how tucked away it felt. No traffic hum, just birdsong and the odd tractor rumble. That first evening, I wandered the short path to the garden, pint in hand, watching the sunset paint the sky pink. It was one of those moments that hits you: life's too short not to embrace these little escapes, mud and all. I'd been grinding at work, feeling a bit frayed, but here, staring at the stars popping out, I reflected on how a daft mishap like my muddy detour was just the universe's way of saying slow down.

Next morning, still riding the high of those first impressions, I headed out for a gentle stroll along the nearby lanes towards South Molton. The air was crisp, farms dotted with cows, and I popped into the town for fresh pasties from the bakery—proper job, flaky pastry and all. Back at the cottage, I lit the fire, cracked open a book, and just breathed it in. The place had that magic: simple, comfortable, with a patio perfect for barbecues and bedrooms that wrapped you up like a hug. Sure, the arrival was a comedy of errors, but it made the peace that followed all the sweeter. If you're after a real Devon reset, this is it—mishaps and all. Can't wait to go back.
