About Devon
I finally made it to Devon after what felt like the world's slowest drive down from Bristol. I'd set off full of beans, playlist blasting some indie folk tunes, but about halfway there, disaster struck – a rogue sheep decided to play chicken with my Fiesta on one of those narrow lanes near Crediton. Heart in my mouth, I slammed the brakes, and the poor thing just ambled off into the hedge like nothing happened. Still, it added a proper Devon welcome, didn't it? By the time I trundled into South Molton, I was buzzing with that holiday anticipation – you know, the kind where you're dying for your first cuppa in peace.

Pulling up to the cottage, I was chuffed to bits. It's one of those classic, cosy farm-style spots tucked away in a quiet spot, all low-key charm with flower boxes and a welcoming vibe that screams "relax here". First impressions? Spot on. The garden wrapped round it like a hug, wildflowers nodding in the breeze, and I could already picture myself flopping into a chair with a book.

Truth be told, that's exactly what I did. After unpacking (which took all of five minutes), I cracked open a Pimm's from the offy in town and claimed the garden as my throne. Devon's got that magic for doing sod all, hasn't it? No grand plans, no ticking off lists – just lazy days stretching out like warm fudge cake. Mornings started with birdsong waking me gently, then I'd potter out with toast and marmalade, feet up on a rug, watching bees bumble about the lavender. The garden was my world: a swing seat creaking softly, herbs for lazy snips into whatever I fancied cooking (or not), and that perfect mix of sun and shade for when the odd cloud rolled in.

Afternoons blurred into reading marathons. I devoured a battered copy of The Secret Garden – fitting, really – losing hours to its pages while the world slowed to a crawl. No rushing to beaches or hikes; who needs 'em when you've got this? One day, I managed a gentle amble to the village shop for milk and a pasty, nodding hellos to locals who all seemed in on the slow-life secret. Back home, it was more lounging, maybe a nap under the apple tree, letting the day's warmth seep into my bones.

There was this one moment of gentle self-reflection as the sun dipped low, painting the garden gold. Sat there with a mug of tea, I realised how knackered I'd been from city hustle – emails, deadlines, the lot. Here, doing very little felt like the biggest achievement. No FOMO, just pure, unadulterated unwind. Even the evenings were bliss: fairy lights twinkling as I strummed a guitar badly, laughing at my own duff chords.

By the end of the week, I felt like a new human – recharged, daftly happy. If you're after proper rest in Devon, find yourself a spot like this. It's the holiday your soul's been whispering for.
