About Devon
We set off from Bristol at the crack of dawn, fully expecting the drive to Hartland to be straightforward, but the sat-nav decided otherwise and sent us down a lane so narrow that the wing mirrors practically kissed the hedges. By the time we finally swung into the little gravel parking spot beside 1 Bed Cottage, we were both frazzled and convinced the postcode had been invented by someone with a grudge. The cottage itself looked every bit the postcard: whitewashed walls, slate roof, and a wooden bench already catching the last of the afternoon sun.

I fumbled the key code three times before the door finally clicked open, and the first thing that hit me was the faint scent of woodsmoke and sea air. Inside, everything felt compact but cleverly arranged; the sofa doubled as a spare bed if needed, and the kitchenette had just enough room for two mugs and a kettle that whistled like an old friend. We dumped our bags, kicked off our shoes, and stepped straight out the back door onto a tiny patio where the view opened straight onto rolling fields that tumbled down toward the cliffs.

A short stroll later—well, more of a shuffle after hours in the car—we reached Hartland Quay, the tide already lapping at the rocky cove. The air tasted properly salty, and we stood there watching a couple of fishing boats bob about like toys. Back at the cottage, we unpacked the essentials (tea bags, obviously) and sat on that bench with steaming mugs, listening to nothing but gulls and the distant hush of waves. It struck me, quite suddenly, how often we race through life planning the next thing and forget that sometimes the best bit is simply arriving somewhere quiet enough to hear your own thoughts again.
