About Devon
We’d been on the road for hours, the sat-nav cheerfully announcing “you have arrived” just as we realised we’d missed the turning by a good mile and a half. By the time we pulled up outside the little white cottage in Woolacombe, my nerves were frayed and the dog was eyeing me as though this were all somehow my fault.

The first thing that struck me was how close the sea sounded. Even with the engine still ticking, I could hear the waves rolling onto the beach a few streets away, that soft, constant hush Devon seems to specialise in. The cottage itself looked exactly like the pictures, only smaller in the best possible way—cosy rather than cramped, with a bright blue door and a window box already full of cheerful geraniums.

We tumbled out stiffly, grabbed the keys from the lockbox, and stepped inside to the smell of fresh linen and a faint trace of woodsmoke from the log burner. The living room opened straight onto a tiny patio where two deckchairs were already set out, as if someone had known we’d need them the moment we arrived. Upstairs, the bedrooms were simple and sunny, with crisp white duvets and the sort of thick towels that make you feel properly on holiday.

After the long drive and that daft detour, the quiet felt almost shocking. No traffic, just the occasional gull and the distant chatter of families heading down to the sand. We unpacked in record time—mainly because there wasn’t much to unpack—and then stood in the kitchen, slightly lost for what to do next. That’s when I noticed the little welcome tray: tea bags, a pint of milk in the fridge, and a packet of shortbread with a note saying “hope the journey wasn’t too beastly.” It was such a small thing, but it made the cottage feel properly ours already.

We wandered out again almost immediately, following the sound of the sea down the lane until the beach appeared between the houses. The tide was out, the sand still damp and gleaming, and for the first time all day my shoulders dropped. Standing there with sand already in my shoes, I realised how tightly I’d been holding on to the idea of “getting there” without ever thinking about what came after. The cottage didn’t need to do anything flashy; it had already done the important bit—given us somewhere to stop, breathe, and remember why we’d come.
