We’d barely made it off the M5 when the sat-nav decided Appledore was “somewhere near the sea” and promptly sent us down a single-track lane that ended in somebody’s driveway. By the time we’d reversed past an indignant flock of sheep and found the actual turning, my partner was laughing so hard the map had slipped under the seat. Still, the moment we pulled up outside the little white cottage, the view over the estuary made every wrong turn worth it.

The owners had left the key in the usual spot under the flowerpot, and we stepped straight into that unmistakable holiday hush: the faint smell of woodsmoke from the Rayburn, the low ceiling beams, and the sound of gulls drifting in through an open window. We dumped our bags, kicked off shoes still gritty from the lane, and wandered out the back gate almost without speaking. Five minutes later we were on the coast path, the tide far out and the sand shining like wet slate.

We’d planned a proper long walk to Peppercombe, but the sky had other ideas. A fat bank of cloud rolled in from the west, turning the horizon the colour of wet slate, and within minutes the first fat drops were spotting our jackets. We ducked under a hawthorn hedge and watched the rain sweep across the bay in silver sheets, laughing at how quickly British weather can change its mind. By the time it eased we were both slightly damp and strangely cheerful, so we carried on as far as the old lifeboat station at Appledore Quay, shoes squelching, and bought two paper-wrapped pasties from the little kiosk that somehow stays open even in drizzle.

Later, with the cottage warmed by the afternoon sun that had sneaked back out, we sat on the bench outside and watched the estuary turn gold. I found myself thinking how rarely we actually slow down like this—how the small disasters of the journey and the sudden shower had forced us to notice things we might otherwise have rushed past: the way the light slides across the mudflats, the neat rows of pastel houses along the quay, the quiet satisfaction of drying socks on the Rayburn door.

By evening the sky was clear again, and we strolled the short distance to the pub garden, the air smelling of salt and warm grass. Tomorrow we’d try the longer cliff route if the forecast held, but tonight it felt enough just to be here, slightly windswept and perfectly content, with the cottage lights glowing behind us like a welcome we hadn’t quite earned but were grateful to receive.
