We’d barely made it off the M5 before the sat-nav decided we were in a field near Barnstaple, and by the time we finally rolled into Bideford the sky had that soft, washed-out look that only happens in early October. A fine drizzle had started, the sort that doesn’t quite count as rain yet still manages to soak you through the shoulders of your coat. We pulled up outside the little white cottage, bags already damp, and that was when I realised I’d left the key in the ignition with the engine still running. Nothing dramatic, just the quiet beep of the car reminding me I was, once again, the family’s designated scatterbrain.

Inside, the cottage felt instantly warmer than the weather outside. The living room caught the last of the daylight through wide windows that looked straight onto the lane leading down to the beach, and the wood burner had been left ready with a neat stack of logs. We lit it straight away, the crackle sounding louder than usual because the street outside was so still. October had already stripped most of the trees along the front, so the view was all muted greens and greys, the sort of palette that makes you slow down without quite meaning to.

After unpacking we wandered the short distance to the shore, hoods up, hands shoved in pockets. The tide was out, leaving long stretches of damp sand that reflected the sky like dull mirrors. A few dog walkers nodded hello, their spaniels racing in and out of the shallows, but otherwise it was just us and the sound of waves that felt gentler than they had in summer. We didn’t stay long; the breeze had a real nip to it now, and the thought of tea and the fire pulled us back up the lane.

Back at the cottage the kitchen smelled faintly of the previous guests’ coffee, and we made our own while watching raindrops race each other down the window. The seasonal shift was everywhere: the shorter days meant we weren’t fighting for space on the beach or queuing for fish and chips, but it also meant the evenings started early and felt longer. We ended up eating in, simple pasta and a bottle of red we’d brought from home, the sort of meal that tastes better when you’re slightly chilled and slightly grateful to be indoors.

Later, once the fire had settled into a steady glow, I sat with a book I’d meant to read for months and kept getting distracted by the quiet. There’s something about arriving at this time of year that strips away the usual holiday rush. No pressure to cram in activities or chase sunshine; just the cottage, the beach a minute’s walk away, and the sense that you’ve caught Devon at its most honest. I found myself wondering why we don’t do this more often—arrive when the crowds have gone and let the season set the pace instead of trying to outrun it.
