About Devon
We’d barely made it out of Bideford when the satnav decided we needed a scenic detour through someone’s farmyard. By the time we found the right lane again, the boot was half open and a rogue pasty wrapper had taken flight down the A39. Still, nothing could spoil the first glimpse of the little white cottage tucked behind its low stone wall, just a pebble’s throw from the beach path. The key was waiting in the lockbox exactly where the owner had promised, and the moment we stepped inside the smell of fresh bread and sea air hit us at once.

The kitchen was small but perfectly judged: a scrubbed pine table, a kettle that boiled in seconds, and a fridge already stocked with local milk. We dumped our bags, changed into flip-flops, and wandered straight out the back gate. The path dipped between dunes and opened onto a sweep of sand that felt almost private at that hour. The tide was out, leaving shallow pools that caught the late sun like scattered mirrors. We walked maybe fifty yards, then simply stopped, letting the quiet settle.

Back at the cottage the deck chairs were already waiting on the tiny patio. I’d packed three paperbacks and finished none of them; instead I watched a herring gull try to steal a crust from next door’s Labrador. My partner dozed with a sunhat over his face, and every so often the faint clink of rigging from the little boats in the bay drifted up on the breeze. Lunch was whatever we fancied—crusty rolls, a wedge of cheddar, tomatoes still warm from the market—and we ate it slowly, barefoot, with sand between our toes.

The days that followed fell into the same gentle rhythm. Mornings began with coffee on the step, watching the colour of the sea shift from slate to turquoise. Afternoons were for reading, or not reading, or simply noticing how the light moved across the whitewashed walls. When we did venture down to the beach again it was only to collect a few shells or paddle in the shallows before the tide turned. Evenings brought fish and chips from the village, eaten at the kitchen table with the windows wide open.

I hadn’t realised how tightly I’d been wound until the cottage forced me to unwind. There was no itinerary, no must-see list, just the soft permission to do almost nothing and call it a holiday. By the third morning the funny satnav mishap had become the story we told whenever anyone asked how the trip had gone, but the real memory was quieter: the sound of waves through the open bedroom window and the surprising peace of letting the days stretch out like the long Devon tide.
